They wouldn't die if the their sail popped, since they're not actually a single organism, but a colony. They would have trouble navigating, though.

Technically, the man-o-war stinging jelly isn't actually a "true" jellyfish, though it is a Cnidarian. Portuguese man-o-wars are in the class Hydrozoa, which include the Hydra (do a google image search- they're tiny, near microscopic organisms similar in appearance to sea anemones). Hydra are often used in intro bio labs as a representative Cnidarian.

True jellies are of the class Scyphozoa, singular organisms. The man o wars are in the order Siphonophora, which are colonial creatures, composed of many specialized animals. Some sting, others reproduce, and others eat. All are connected by a common "stomach", called a gastrovascular cavity.

As trivia, they fill their sails (the bottle bit) with carbon monoxide (CO), the poisonous stuff that kills people when they leave their car running in their house.

    Breaking news
Capsized Australian yachtsman not attacked by Jellyfish or sharks

    From http://www.dailymercury.com.au/loca...localnews&thesubsection=&thesecondsubsection=
Thoughts of daughter sustain man in water

    18.12.2007

ALL around was darkness and as he swam in exhaustion in the seas off Cape Hillsborough, Trevor Turner, 39, was sustained by thoughts of his two-year-old daughter Harley.

For almost three hours he kept himself going without a life jacket late Sunday night as the search helicopter passed overhead.

Beneath the water Mr Turner feared sharks scenting his cut toe and jellyfish he had noticed earlier.

Every big wave buried his head and stung his weary eyes with salt..........

    He named his boat "Caretaker"

    .....after a school handyman?

The start of the article is poetic:

    Thoughts of daughter
    sustain man in water

    It could continue:

    The sharks did not attack
    but they really oughter

Fuck, wasn't an ithsmus, only a promentary
There goes my chance at a decent commentary
    Wife is a bitch
and so life replicates disaster at sea, poor chap, doomed before his journey ever commenced, poor misbegotten fool who thought he stood a chance at the not so pearly gates of promise, the gate of the future, the pre-destined shark-infested waters...

Yes Spud, it's all a metaphor.
Life is setting bravely out to sea, on a deceptively fine day,
in your flimsy boat, which you have imaginatively called "Caretaker"

You end up trying to bail it out
but inevitably become prey to sharks and jellyfish
"every big wave burying your head and stinging your weary eyes with salt"

    Sad but true.

I don't know what kind they are.
I just know that wherever they are is a place I don't want to be.
I don't like them at all.

There is something akin to an alien invasion
    about a swarm of jellyfish.
