Yeah, I was wondering what the state of the Sci was recently. So, have you chosen between axes and tentacles yet?

It was pretty obvious to me even as a kid, although I had the advantage of many kids because I started the series at book 1 instead of book 2. Book 1 even has a little morality replay of the Fall of Man, albeit done by some lady from another dimension so that we could comfortably believe that there was nothing really wrong with any of us, just that stupid lady who brought evil to the world. Again, like Christianity but with none of the hard parts - other than the fact that he's still blaming a woman for some reason.

However, the big fuzzy lion dying to save Edmund from his own mistakes and then coming back for no apparent reason might have provided a bit of a clue.

Hm, well, I find it easy to separate a big fuzzy lion from Jesus. Anyway, is anything wrong with the Christian themes?

I think most kids just thought of it as a fun story. Pullman's stories, on the other hand, were in significant part pretty blatant propaganda, so I don't know what he's complaining about.

For my part I find it easy to separate a fat guy in a red suit from the spirit of giving - I guess they're unrelated thereby.

Hm... I would guess that you are either not an atheist or not very old. If you lived during the period where daily Bible readings were still a normal part of public schooling, you might see that an allegory of the Christian faith retold with animal puppets is, in fact, an advertisement of said faith.

Of course, it's also possible you live in an environment where the background level of Jesus advertising is high enough that the works of C.S. Lewis seem subtle by comparison. If this is the case then I would only remind you that it is not like that everywhere in the world.

    Different..

I'm not that young but didn't grow up in anywhere like that.

    It's a different thing though.

I think the lack of effect enjoying the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid had on me and everyone else I know is evidence of what I've said. I don't know anyone who let it effect their religious thinking. If you want to call it propaganda, fine, but it is very poor propaganda.

I haven't heard so much over analysis since I heard that Star Wars was an allegory for coming to terms with homosexuality!

Really? I think the allegory is pretty overt in both cases.

    Can't I have both?

    Just gettin' started!

Axes and tentacles... Odathoth... Thyorlathotep? I'm having trouble picturing it, but that's an aesthetic matter really. I'm sure the balance of sharp and sticky would be... refreshing.

I have only read the first book. From what I recall, the book is more critical of organized religion than anything else. And that's hardly a new theme worthy of getting all worked up about.

True the movie was lame, it had a budget higher than lord of the rings which put it just a tad over how boring that was
