Sure. For example, SAM and Q have received infractions as moderators.

Certainly not, and I'm not trying to side with any whiners out there. And, again, as far as I know, you've never done anything objectionable at all. I just wanted to emphasize that most people are going to view any posts by mods (in their subforum or not) as examples of what kind of behavior is promoted here, and so you all need to be on your best behavior all the time.

Uhh... okay. I'm not really seeing what bearing cultural relativism has on my point, though. I.e., in many eastern societies, authorities face much higher expectations than they do in the West, so...

Theoretically yes, I agree, but we're all humans and this is not really a thankful job.
If people repress their emotions too much, psychological tension arises, and such people might do something not really smart if suddenly find themselves over the edge.

They are also more cruel, like power methods and don't care for human rights so much.

Any way, I'm not saying mods shouldn't have higher standarts, they should be chosen as moderators exactly because of their higher standarts, all I'm saying is that mods shouldn't be expected to be non-human or super humane.

I'm just speaking, it's not particulary addressed to you.

But if everone asked to reverse their vote that would mean 24 noes and 22 yesses. Why not give up and admit that you have been a silly monkey?

I'm in favor of keeping the current system of infractions, but I have several suggestions.

    1. More mods. In categories that are more controversial, more mods would mean some measure of checks and balances. Also, mods will be less likely to feel overwhelmed by the work.

    2. Reports go to PM rather than e-mail. This would mean a faster response time.

    3. Impeachment. Members can get rid of a mod with enough votes in a poll. For instance a 2/3 majority of all those that voted.

    4. Term limits.

    Against, because:

    1. Mods would step on each others paws.
    2. And PM notifications go to e-mail anyway. I don't know about you, but I check my e-mail a lot more often than visit Sciforums.
    3. Mods would be more tolerant to kooks in fear of impeachment. Masses are dumb.
    4. Why change if a mod is doing his or her job well? This is no democracy.

One factor in favor of the infraction system is that it inserts a step before banning. It might seem like getting rid of it will limit moderator's powers, but that is not the case. It will only make the system more obscure, since there would be no visible indication of what a member has done wrong.

The infraction system lets people know what moderators are doing.

Just makes for more whining; I got one, he didn't! She does this, he doesn't, etc.

Warning followed by temp ban, more useful and productive than providing ammo for whiners.
