Like food, it can be transformed into a work of art, or it can poison you.

A lot of the folks here are only interested in being 'cool', which in our society means being as vulgar and cynical as possible.

So dont expect anything beautiful or artistic.

    That's a sad perspective,
    Cynicism can be beautifully artistic.

    I miss Satyr.

Thank god spuriousmonkey's ban is nearly over, I do miss his artistic vulgarity and cynicism.

Huh-huh—dilettantes do tend to be artistically vulgar.

You have got to be kidding me.
Aren't there enough porn sites you could visit to "fulfill your desires" ? Why would you Create an Adults Only XXX in a Science forum :bugeye: How do you plan on keeping the kids out of that area anyway?????

Then you're not nearly as smart as I assumed.
And, left unchecked, the persona bleeds naturally and heavily into the role - for better or worse. It's possible to stem the flow with a judiciously-placed finger or two.

Central to maintaining a professional attitude is the ability to maintain a certain distance: to not get personally involved; to remain calm and collected; to be polite but firm; to not envision "little gangs" everywhere like a paranoid schizophrenic. This you have singularly failed to do.
You're right, it wouldn't, since you probably don't have my intuitive capacity. But, even if you do, I'm not the one setting myself up as a beacon of moral propriety, now, am I.
Unlike displays of anger out of all proportion to the context, of which I've witnessed several - and been on the receiving end of quite a few - I've yet to see a single comment referring to your capacity for self-restraint. I won't ask you for links but provide them if you wish.
They're often wildly inaccurate and, worse, then used as a jumping-off point for wilder conclusions, or whatever sanctions you deem necessary. These often far outweigh the offence, because the analytical path that leads to them is so distorted. For instance, you often refer to me as 'childish', and act towards me on this basis, when nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is that I have a large capacity for (non-malicious) mischief and an instinctive dislike of pompous, overly serious, self-important personalities. Don't puff out your chest and blow yourself up and try to talk down to me because I never leave home without a large sewing needle, yes? To give you a much better example: spuriousmonkey's "Jesus" comment perfectly illustrates my point. Several members have given you accurate assessments of spuriousmonkey's rationale in making that comment but for personal reasons, or because you're a very poor judge of people, you've chosen to ignore them. You are right on this and everyone else is wrong? Do you even have it in you to admit you made a mistake and to apologise for it?
I don't think I can settle for 'seldom, if ever' but I'll settle for sometimes - and occasionally pre-emptively so. Dispute that if you want - we both know different.
I'm glad to hear it, if mildly surprised. What would you say are your main faults?

You're escalating with the personal remarks. I have no wish to engage in a psychoanalytic session with you, so I won't bother responding to those. Your claims to be smarter and more insightful than me come across as immature egotistical posturing. And other parts of your post, reading between the lines, sound hurt and defensive. While you are happy to dish out personal comments, you seem ill-equipped to receive them. Enough said.

Regarding your accusation that I am "like a paranoid schizophrenic" because I envision "little gangs everywhere", you know that you are making a wildly overblown claim. I have seen only one "little gang", not "little gangs everywhere". The one existing loosely-organised (I assume) little gang I have seen is the one associated with spuriousmonkey and his "rebel" forum. I don't know whether you are part of it or not, and I don't really care to spend the time to find out. While its self-appointed "members" may think it is important, I do not. And I certainly have no paranoia about it.

You have special insights into spuriousmonkey's motives and rationales, but I do not. How? Because of your amazing perceptiveness and insight into human nature, or what? Nothing to do with a little gang, I am sure.

I don't see this conversation going anywhere useful, so I'll stop now.

James why dont you back up and take stock of what has been transpiring on sciforums concerning moderation over the last several months . It is you who is peceived as the problem by others , why dont you step back for a moment a look at how you moderate over other people and see where you are at fault . I cant believe with all that has transpired that you still see yourself as blameless .

    Brian:

I am perceived as a problem by a small group (some might suggest "gang") of others. The people with the biggest problem are the people who are unable to control their impulses to insult other people or to troll the forum in various ways.

Moderators are big, easy targets. There's also fewer moderators than members. A bit of self-reflection on the part of members wouldn't go astray from time to time.

For example, while you're busy pointing out all my faults, why don't you list some of yours?

perhaps the reality of this grouping occurs ony due to your unique perceptions
    an external imposition of unity

    Gustav:

That's five posts in row from you, none of which makes much sense.

Next time, try to gather your thoughts before you post, and then do it in one go, ok? And try to post something related to the topic at hand.

Otherwise, people might start to think you're just a troll, or (worse) that you have some kind of problem.
