At the bottom of postings is a reply box called 'Post Quick Reply'. Curious: How is this reply any quicker than any other reply? Is this some remnant of slower Internet days? Sometimes I start to type in the text box and realize I'm in the 'Post Quick Reply' are by mistake. No big deal. Just curious as to the purpose of 'Post quick Reply' which isn't any quicker than hitting the 'reply' button. (feel free to use the 'Post Quick Reply' box to make a reply ::bugeyePlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
If you hit the reply button you have to wait for the reply page to open. With quick reply you just type in the box and send. It's much quicker.
I think they should have a list of pre written answers to pick from....... Then you select one and hit post quick reply that would be even quickerPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
What I really hate is when a an edit is desired and I'm presented with the quick reply box instead of the regular one with advanced controls. I've noticed though that upon a second edit the advanced box is presented. Still. BTW -- what's the time limit to edit one's post before the tiny gray, date-stamped print is shown down at the bottom?
What's that, please? Chewing gum...I've wondered also about edit time. It's bizarre how I can read a reply before posting and hit 'submit'...then 'voila': atrocious spelling mistakes or a mistake (to add a cliche to another thread) "as plain as the nose on my face". I'd never make a good copy editor.
And... what's the reason for the delay after hitting reply? I've noticed that some boards are a lot faster at this (and a small number a lot slower). It's not intended as a critcism, but maybe my good friend Plazma could take some time in a quiet moment(?) to look into speeding this up a bit? It'd be much appreciated. No -- not that time delay, but the time it takes after an edit before the small print appears after an edited post -- you know: Last edited by Chewing Gum : Today at 1:11 PM.
Then we each have our own concerns. In answer to your query I find that a good watch helps to time things. As does a cheap one.
Yeah, like I'm gonna start timing and clicking and timing and clicking and timing and cl -- oops, gotta start all over again.
The time delay can be caused by a number of reasons: Since the forums works with a database there is actually a limit on the number of connection attempts to the forum at the same time, this means if a lot of users are active the data being posted has to wait until it can go through the process of being admitted to the database. For the most part this isn't a major problem unless the forums becomes over busy (like it did with the 'Great downtimes') There is also measures placed to try and make sure that your written text doesn't contain exploitable code for Cross-Scripting and the like, it's not a major hack itself (The code that checks for it) however it's intensive on large posts. Further more there is also the possibility that your own internet connection can sometimes 'drop packets' when that happens entire posts don't get received at the destination (The forum) and therefore doesn't get entered into the database, this can leave your browser attempting to send something which 'times out'.
Stryder gave a good answer on this. He's always faster and much more knowledgable than I am. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I thought I'm your freind?
