what are the sociological reasons behind the concept of human race?

Should we build our society on the concept of race?

    And is racism possibly racist?

I see it more as a ethnic divercity rather than a race. I always thought there was only one "race" the human race. Everyone is then divided up between their ethnic cultures. Am I mistaken?

I don't know. This is freethought. There are no wrong answers.

obviously there is more than one race, otherwise people wouldn't talk about it.

Cultures are built upon their own beliefs, mannerisms, ethnic types and other charastistics. When people "see" others that are doing things that they seem to be drawn to , that is when a society starts to form. Another way is to just make people do as you want them to by force.

Nice, but show someone a picture of a naked black man and ask them whether the man in the picture likes wooden cloggs or lederhoses they will say: huh??

If you ask whether he is back or white, they will he is black.

They did tests on this. All people indicate that colin powell is black, although it is clear that on the spectrum he is more white than he is black.

So race exist in the minds of people. Independent of ethnicity.

People have been misinformed about the existance of 'races' for many hundreds of years in order to subjugate and enslave. What has existed and is perpetuated in the mind takes a long time to purge.
In the minds of *white* people anyone bearing obviously non white ancestry is labelled *black* regardless of their skin colour.
Are there genetic markers for racial adaptations or are there genetic markers for geographical adaptations? Or both?

People talk about god(s) too, so...

As for the original question, I think it pays to look at the history of the idea of race. It became an important concept in order to justify imperialism and exploitation. So no, the idea shouldn't be the basis of society.

As, cosmictraveler suggest "culture" and "cultural differences" are a better concept for describing differences and in many areas have become more prominent than a race-based explanation for differences.

hmmm...there isn't really a yes or no answer to this....

and it might be a long scientific answer. Not really one we are looking for in this subforum...

    ----
Let's play a mindgame: Let us assume there are no genetic markers for race, although this might be false.

Does it change anything on a social level? Our brain is still developed to see differences and feels compelled to classify the differences.

I think you can put a scientific answer here it is a sciforum subforum after all. as long as you link to compelling evidence, that is.
Our brain is brainwashed by governments with the help of the media; rather than evolution?
Divided we fall. Therefore it is not in the interests of those who would control us to realise that we are more alike than we are different?

Isn't race equal to subspecies ? And isn't it so that all humans today are members of the subspecies Homo sapiens sapiens ?
This means there are no races.

Race is simply a socially constructed IDEA. Its not actually relevant.

surely you are not going to deny that people classify people under different races.

After all your talk about human evolution you want to perpetuate the myth of race. Come on now...

Actually scientists do not necessarily deny the existence of race and genetic variation within the human population.

They simply deny that the minute biological differences should be used for ideological purposes.

Or as the geneticist AWF Edwards stated in his classic quote:

That doesn't mean there is no genetic variation at all between race groups. It's just very minor.

Other people translate this into; there is no social value of race.

or is there? Since people put so much value on it? Is the entire world brainwashed or is the classification an ancient evolutionary protective mechanism?

I mean wrong as in error, not ethically perse.
Biologically speaking all humans alive today belong to the same race.
