A woman has to cough up a 200,000 fine for sharing 24 songs.

yeah, I understand the verdict: you are cocksucking leeches who think ruining a person's life is a valid method to install fear for the greater good of increasing profits for shareholders.

Boycott the RIAA & if you do need to buy any albums from the labels they represent buy them used so no additional money goes into their coffers. If you want to know whether a CD is in their purview: http://www.riaaradar.com/

    Leeches, huh?

Some of you people absolutely disgust me! The real leeches are the people who download illegal copies of stuff and the people they share it with. Stealing is stealing is stealing - a better award would be a cool half-million bucks for EACH song illegaly downloaded. Along with five years of hard time, regardless of age.

I am all for buying from Independent artists and small labels if you want more money to go to teh artist, or can't stand corporate music.
In that case, don't buy corporate music - but that doesn't give you the right to steal it.
Boycott the RIAA. I think that's great. Buy directly from Independents at the shows and from their websites. Bury big-money music by not supporting it. You have that right to choose whom to support. Stealing from them is a right you don't have.

They offered to settle out of court and she refused; she had shared 1,700 songs in total, and she was aware that she was breaking the law. By choosing to fight the accusation in court and refusing to settle for a couple of grand instead she proved that she's a dickhead.

The fact that the music industry, just like all other global industries, makes big bucks, does not give anyone the right to rip off their products, just because it's easy to do and is ubuiquitous.

why stop at that. why don't we chop their ears?

why do you insist on creating a society that rewards theft by corporations and punishes theft by individuals.

Are your morals totally screwed up?

I don't buy any music, nor do I download anything. Why would I? I am not participating in supporting theft either way.

No, my morals are absolutely fine, thank you. And the fact that you yourself don't buy or steal is neither here nor there,

What IS a fact, though, is that anyone who produces anything - music, software, cars or bows and arrows is entitled to make a profit and should be protected from thieves who would steal it.

This is no different than the thread about looting during a blackout or whatever. People who steal are SCUM - pure and simple. (And we discussed the VERY rare exceptions in that thread, no need to repeat them here.)

If you want an artist's painting, does that give you the right to steal it?

    this is news to me.

Most artists I know are on welfare. I should tell them they have the right to make a profit.

Does it give you the right to send a postcard with his painting to someone else?

Why are you singling out music? Isn't almost everything we use, sold by corporations? Are you not a consumer of anything, sold by corporations?

Should we punish corporations, by stealing their products, with the simple excuse that they are making too much money?
