    Update:

For those of us from Canada....... we're pooched.

Despite using a proxy... you won't be able to login.

I'm trying to think of a workaround. So far all I can come up with is to re-register with a different Country location in the profile.

Have you tried The Pirate Bay instead? It's big and it's fast - doesn't have the specialist content of Demonoid but it's great for most purposes.

The pirate bay is one of the largest if not the largest site for torrents of any kind. The speeds mostly suck compared to some other websites. And Demonoid isn't really specialized, it has everything as well. Because the Pirate bay doesn't require any registering and ratio building, there are more people that just leech and upload as little as possible. Mostly it's kinda slow. For my standards

It is possible to know where someone is by just using his IP. They probably use that.

The Pirate Bay is reasonably fast for most uses - often quicker than Demonoid. So if you're using Demonoid you should certainly be trying TPB too.

I have used many torrent sites, the smaller, more restricted ones are usually the fastest, such as Bitsoup. But from all the large, more open torrent sites I'd definitely say that Demonoid is the best. It has almost anything and the speeds usually rock. I sometimes use Piratebay when demonoid is down for example, and some others such as mininova. And many others that don't exist anymore.

    Nope.

Definitely not when using proxy jumps.

And with respect to TPB: while I don't mind using this in extreme circumstances, it's more often than not a crapshoot. On Demonoid, there is always vast amounts of commentary on the quality of the data.

Duh, thats the whole idea behind using a proxy server.

    There was a misunderstanding.

The proxy would only be of use to him while he surf's the website, should he have a user account and it's linked to his ratio's the likelihood is it can check what IP you are Torrenting from. For the most part people don't use proxy tunnels for torrenting because bandwidth costs money.

It's not just Canada being hit by it, on other site's they've adopted a US Blacklisting of torrent trackers, which means people in the US are less likely to find trackers accepting them.

Admittedly this means there is a lot of change brewing, especially in regards to legislation about control over the internet by countries which are obviously being pressured by their purse strings.

Indeed. A number of people I know fear that this is the 'beginning of the end'.

Nevertheless, it has always been the case that if something can be built, it can be undone. I have no fear that control of the internet will fall to those Corporations who have a vested interest therein. It just may become much more difficult to wrestle some of that control back.

What irks me in particular about this activity of late however, is that under current Canadian legislation, it's completely legal for individuals to copy legitimate data......

    and yet here we are...

I was thinking of something like download the torrent files with the proxy, and download the torrent content without a proxy. I'm not sure exactly how the tracker system works, but maybe the tracker does not block Canadian addresses, and if it does, maybe you can try to gather seeds with the proxy and then turn it off or something.

As for internet falling into the hands of corporations... thats very difficult because there's a lot of different countries with different laws and agendas. Plus if the they limit the flow of information too much, maybe the internet will get divided once again, like it was before the internet came into existence, which was basically a bunch of large networks connected to each other globally.

    Exactly what I do.
However, recognize that as soon as you begin file transfer, you're connected, peer to peer, revealing your IP.

Remember, Corporations have more power to sway any countries' legislation than any other relevant body (i.e., the people).

    Bring it on.

Wrong. Corporations have power as long as people buy from them.

    Wrong.

That assumes that people have a choice in who they buy from.

I've been thinking that the amount of downtime that Demonoid has been having lately is suspicious.

Also, I noticed a while back that torrentspy blocks US ip addresses now.

Thank Moloch for the Pirate Bay.

Wait. So. They move to Canada and then block Canadian traffic? Isn't that a bit odd?
