Edwards: 'Pretty Soon We’re Not Going to Have a Young African-American Male Population in America.'


Asked about what he could do about "inner-city kids partaking in violence" at the MTV/MySpace Forum yesterday, Democratic candidate John Edwards offered an apocalyptic prediction for young black males:

“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”:bugeye:

Hyperbole much? Despite popular misperception and those who find it a convenient talking point to illustrate inescapable racism, there are more young African-American men in college than in prison. In 2005, according to the Census Bureau, there were 864,000 black men in college. According to Justice Department statistics, there were 802,000 in federal and state prisons and jails; between the ages of 18 and 24, however, black men in college outnumber those incarcerated by 4 to 1.

Edwards is stoopid! Why would he give his opponents a nuclear bomb to obliterate his career? For the forseable future, every interview John Edwards gives will start with this question. "Do you really think all African American men will be in Jail or dead soon" Stoopid remark, I don't think he's racist, just to far removed from reality". Republicans will recite this remark everytime a Liberal acuses them of being racially insensitive. Good job John.

What are you smoking Ganymede? There are alot of young blacks in prison, and this situation can't continue. Nothing racist about declaring this fact.

It's a manner of speech. Of course not all of them are going to jail, but the way they are being incarcerated is a big issue in this country.

 

Its not an issue so long as the money printing presses are up and running. That being the case senator Edwards was insensitive to America's racial minorities. Maybe we should go beyond assigning blame and work together so we can all enjoy the fruits of our great nation... Watch to see how the black leaders respond. I bet Edwards gets a pass on this one.

 

Really? Based on the numbers it seems like Black Men aren't the only ones who're in danger.

Between 1990 and 2006, the number of white and Hispanic jail inmates increased at the same average annual rate. The number black inmates increased at a slower pace.

Yeah, but blacks only make up some 12% of the total population, yet there about as many blacks in prison as whites! See? 12% of the population, but 80% of the prison population. See?

Well that's true also. The problem of filling prisons is a reflection of society's problems, our ability as a society to care for those with mental health problems or drug addiction, to deal with poverty. Running a prison has become a profitable venture, and like war, that profit can lead to the creation of political conditions that support the industry.

 

They aren't 80% of the prison population. They are way overrepresented considering that they are 12% of the populaiton though.

And how do you explain that most of the kids that come from the exact same background DO NOT end up in prison? See, ...if they don't all end up in prison, then the fault must lie somewhere else, huh?

I know of no prison system in the USA that's making a profit. Do you?

There are several for-profit prisons in the US, in various places, and several private companies formed to handle incarceration for the State at a profit. Many corporations make serious money servicing prisons in various ways. What do you mean by a "prison system" ?

Last I heard, the percentage of Americans living in institutions has held pretty steady over the years - but the institutions involved used to be psychiatric and other such, as well as criminal. Reagan kicked a lot of people out of government mental institutions - approximately, more or less, that percentage of the citizenry of people seems to have ended up in jail, by interesting coincidence.

But they weren't so predominantly black.

No two children come from the "exact same" background. We deal in probabilities only, when valuating the effects of environment.

btw: don't forget lead poisoning, and other such factors.

 

I'd say the opposite. When 19 blacks attacked 3 white women in Long Beach California they got a slap on the wrist. Now it looks like the Jena 6 will get a slap on the wrist as well.

Every murder is investigated and prosecuted. By your logic, the fact that blacks kill way more often per capita is because cops ignore murders committed by whites.

 

I really do think you're missing the point on this one Ganymede. The point is that we ought to stop the social-policy and law-enforcement crusade that aspires to such a result.

Take Sudoku's point, for instance:

He can call it what he wants, but the "slap on the wrist" is the going rate. Bending over backwards to inappropriately prosecute a juvenile as an adult just because the accused is black was the deviation that brought this case to prominence. The last thing people like Sudoku want is for the Jena Six to be treated like other people involved in the fights that went undisciplined, leading up to the assault in question.

 

so are blacks upset by what he said? Or just white republicans?
