I use Windows for developing for the .NET platform, creating interactive flash, encoding videos, running development servers. Whatever Linux can do, Windows does it better/faster.
Something is seriously wrong in the way the Linux Kernel schedules thread and slices processor time. It's horrible compared to Windows. The whole OS actually feels slower when multiple tasks are executing compared to Windows....it's almost as if I was using Windows 98 when multitasking on Linux

Example:
Opening a RAW 4gig flash animation (encoded using mpeg) using VLC on Linux = 2 seconds
Windows = instant

I use Linux for slacking on the internet, writing work papers and enjoying multimedia and live in a world where a two second difference doesn't matter if the overall experience is more enjoyable.

If you find Windows better suited to your needs, by all means, use it, nobody cares, except maybe Bill Gates who gets his cash.

I'm assuming you are using OpenOffice for writing documents. Last time I used it, it corrupted my documents. Office 2007 (or any version of office) has yet to corrupt my document, and it's way more innovative and more productive to openoffice by light years. Also notice that Sun Microsystems has licensed the code to OpenOffice so the code-base is theres and they can do whatever they want with it.

I'll give Bill Gates and Microsoft cash, because they actually bring innovations and stuff that work into the market.

You are defending Linux as much as I'm promoting Windows.

Therefore, correction: YOUR love life is supposed to be private.

 

How am I defending Linux? I made a thread informing of a new Mandriva Linux release and the new or improved features.
I did it because I use Linux and numerous of the members here do so too.

All your posts are why you find Windows better, and not even mentioning anything from the article (did you even read it?).

In none of my posts I have said that Linux overall is better than Windows.

As I see it you're just a fanboy on (MS sponsored) drugs.

 

You made subtle hints that Linux is better than Windows SEVERAL times, I just wanted to post the facts. I'm not a fanboy, I use what's best (I have several Linux machines as well).

I have two identical laptops....one has Ubuntu installed and one has Windows Vista installed. I gave the Ubuntu laptop to my dad, who has no technical knowledge, and he said "Do you have anything other than Windows 98?? This is way too slow". I gave him the Windows Vista laptop, and he said "So this is Linux, it's fast!". My dad is definetly not a fan-boy.

 

Exactly, you use what's best for you, and so do I, so be a good boy and continue to use it in a manner that doesn't create offtopic posts in a thread about another OS.

From reading that, it has a lot of short-comings and less innovation. When new OS versions come out, it has to at least score a 10 on the "wow factor"/innovation scale.....Leopard did that, Vista did that, even Solaris did that......Mandrake Linux did not. However it scores a 10 on the "yawn factor" and boring scale.

Leopard has Time machine, Spotlight (indexer), iLife, folder organization and display schemes...piratically everything you'd ever need. Vista has ALL of these features also. Solaris has some. All 3 OSes come with these out of the box. Linux has none of this out of the box.

However, if I were a Windows fanboy, I would not talk about innovation much, cause Vista is a bad copy of OSX and quite a few features have been in OSX and Linux for a few years.


Any way, I'm really excited about the new Mandriva release and will install it on my laptop as soon as it is released, and then I'll share with my experience.

 

The kernel developers have put a LOT of work into the scheduler recently. Besides, if you don't like the Linux kernel, use BSD or Solaris kernels. Most of the same free software is also available on them.

Your claim that windows does every Linux can do better and faster is simply not true. I'm not saying this because I like Linux, but because it isn't the truth. Benchmarks, like all statistics, are easy to manipulate. It would be possible under equal, yet tweaked circumstances to make windows take 10 seconds and linux less than 1 for the task you described. On fast modern systems, you have to have seriously misconfigured the computer to make it noticeably slow.

Vista features are based of some innovations by apple...but they only copied the concept. For an example, the new Lexus parallel parks itself.....if BMW copies that...are they copying Lexus? NO, they are copying the feature but the "circuitry/material" behind it is different. The first graphic OS was by VisiOn....does that mean Apple's Lisa copied VisiOn??? Exactly.

Linux doesn't have half the features Vista has. Where's the shadow-folders? Where's the affinity manager? etc etc

 

Those things are superfluous. But if you wanted to implement them on Linux, it could be done.

 

I'm not talking about synthetic benchmarks, they're useless. In vista, I have firefox open, I'm encoding a video, I'm running 4 virtual machines, I have several folders open and everything works smoothly. In Mandrake, as soon as I open HardDrake and firefox, the OS starts slowing down while it's processing the other two threads. This is with a quadcore and 2x 10k raptors RAID 0! I haven't tweaked either OS.

Just browsing the harddrake and other configuration panels, the OS feels slow...infact, opening any of the configuration panels seems to take 1-2 seconds....where as in Windows, it's instant.

 

I have a nice transparent AERO GUI with neat effects. How come Linux struggles to do this? And even if they pull it off (beta beryl).....why is it horribly slow and unstable? How come Solaris, MAC OSX both have stable GUIs and Linux doesn't. Is there an actual reason?

It's possible that Mandrake isn't using the SMP. But there are a million other reasons it could be slow. I recommend you try the Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu, with one of the latest kernels (it has an excellent scheduler.) Just try it out, it should work perfectly, and you might like it.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of Mandrake. If it were my machine, I'd custom compile a mean lean gentoo on there, but gutsy will get you almost-as-good results in 20 minutes install time.

Beryl is dead. Compiz-fusion is the new Linux standard and is actually fairly stable. The problems are usually associated bad video drivers. Personally, I don't like 3d effects. They add overhead and not much functionality. And with KDE 4 coming down the pipe, we have all the eye candy and functionality we need.
