Why Is It So Hard For Most People To Admit That They Are Wrong?

    Why?

In my experience, to avoid this, people do all sorts of things to this end. For example: they ignore your arguments (and sometimes insult instead) or only reply to your argument(s) that is/are most easily countered (so that they can fool themselves into thinking that they are right).

Selective perception. People read or hear something and filter out anything that could prove them wrong, because their ego doesn't like being wrong. After which they only reply to whatever is most suitable for them... Trying to avoid stuff that could prove them wrong.

Because I think mostly its a difference of opinion or beliefs. Its not right/wrong. There are a lot of people out there who would rather be right and belabour their arguement til doomsday. I don't care enough to sweat every detail and split hairs.
Insecure peopel don't let go. Me, I just get confused and give up.

Yep, women are 'always right'. That's why you'll never win an argument with them, but you can choose to ignore them in the middle of one and walk out of the room. Hehe.

As far as why people won't admit they're wrong, it could be for a number of reasons.
-proving someone wrong can be construed as 'one-upping', and lots of people like to one up their peers/colleagues
-getting proven wrong is embarrassing, and admitting you're wrong takes a lot of humility, which most people don't have enough of
-proving someone wrong for some people, makes them feel good about themselves; much like people with inferiority complexes like to bully other people to make themselves look and feel better

Because everyone has an opinion as to what they believe is the "right" thing.

When you have such STRONG feelings about something, it's hard for anybody
to convince you that you are wrong. I mean I can be very stubborn when my mind
is made up on a certain topic.....I know its a flaw oh well.

Nobody is right, so there is no moral hindrance to claiming to be right.

That starts getting into viewpoints and perceptions there.
    For example, sonic girl's thread about suspecting that her fiance is cheating;

While I don't agree with your view on snooping, shorty, I can see why you view the situation the way you do. I don't consider you to be wrong about it, but I wouldn't go about it the way you would.
I think all the posters in that thread felt strongly about their p.o.v.'s on it and there were stubborn arguments back and forth on it.

Yeah, right n' wrong is completely, totally, subjective!

What's right in the USA might not be right in Europe. What's right in New York is probably not right in Los Angeles. What's right in xyz, probably isn't right in the Middle East. Etc. Etc.

People don't want their ego bruised, so they'll fight 'til death.

I noticed that forum arguments like that end up getting so irrational that those involved resort to personal insults towards other members....to which I sit back, enjoy, and laugh at.

When I 'paint' a square in photoshop, and say this is a square, I am not right?

When I point at my phone and say "To me this is a phone", I am not right?

does it matter if I call a square a 4 cornered circle, or a phone a speaking device?

    See baron max's post.

A square isn't a 4 cornered circle but that is beside the point, just because a pen is a pen doesn't mean that it isn't a writing device.

And I read Max's post and obviously I didn't agree...

"Whatever you say something is, it is not."

On the topic, yes, people don't like being wrong, since it can lose them social face, and damage their ego, whatever an ego is.
