Based on the latest US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women make about 80 cents for every dollar than men make. Why do you think that is? To what extent do you think it is due to unfair sex discrimination? I don't think many of us are fatuous enough to think it's caused completely by sexism. There are many other factors at play here, such as the fact that men and women often do different kinds of work, they have different abilities and strengths, women have the role of caregiver, men are expected to win the bread, women get often get pregnant, and I'm sure the list could go on. From some articles I've read, they say there have been studies that control for these different factors and show that the pay gap still persists and they imply sexism as the cause. Anybody know of any good studies which indicate sexism causes it, and to what extent? If you think sexism causes the difference, what makes you think so? What is the evidence? My hope is that people can back it up with studies and articles instead of "well, I know this smart woman is sexually harassed by her boss and doesn't get promoted and..." I don't care much for that kind of evidence. I suspect there is evidence, but I want to be sure that it's good. So why do they make less?
The ones I pay for for their"services" sure charge allot more than the doctors I see. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I'd personally like to see a study done comparing women with children compared to single women - pay levels. Also: Single women to Single Men Single woman to Man with kids. Single man to Man with kids.(really interested in this one personally) And the one feminists will love: women with kids to Single men and men with kids. Sure as hell more useful than just Woman to Man comparisons.
we earn less because a man is seen and always be seen has a stronger person who can do more work, and the stronger part is right they are stronger than us women, but i earned less then my male counterparts at work has a bar person, and i could run rings around around them all. also it depends who you work for, women are not suppose to be paid less, which is why uk has got the nation minimum wage
I read an article the other day that did some sort of test/survey. The results determined that more often than not, during the interview process, women were much less aggressive in negotiating a salary. In essence meaning that most women were afraid to ask for a bigger salary, even though employers/interviewers were ready to offer them the same amount. I'd like to find it....here it is! It's not from the same site, but it looks like it's the same article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/women/story/0,,2153102,00.html I also wonder if they factor in dirty jobs that most women won't do but most men will.
Great, now I know what your opinions are. But why? What's the evidence that it is caused by sexism? Some would argue the wage differences can be attributed to the different choices that the different genders make on the whole. Men are more willing to do more dangerous work than women. I haven't seen many women work as Alaskan fisherwomen. Men are also physically stronger. I'm sure the strength difference has something to do with the fact that most construction workers are men. Construction work pays well. Better than, say, a kindergarten teacher or social worker. These things can't be ignored. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_pay_for_women#The_.22Choice.22_Theory I figured you would, but it's still embarrassing!
I would love to see a study comparing men and women doing the same job, with the same education, and the same level of experience.
What dirty jobs? I know alot of women that do them. My neighbour used to clean up after operations in the operating room. You can imagine the bloody mess! It's mostly women at the hospital who clean all the public washrooms, if that isn't dirty I don't know what is. What about nannies and daycare workers who change shitty diapers all day. Some men are more prissy when it comes to getting dirty then women.
My husband says when I get up in the middle of the night to 'see what that noise is', change the flat tire in the rain, and make it 'men and children first' off the sinking boat is when I get paid the same. ass
Women get PMS every month, and some get violently sick. Women get pregnant and have to take maternity leave. Women get married, then move away with their husbands. Women get married, then quit to be a housewife and mother. And the younger they are, the worse they are as long-term employees. So they should get paid less. Better that companies don't even hire them. Women should be at home taking care of the home and the children and cooking dinner for her family. ...and taking care of the man's sexual needs!
