Tiny in that if it were a meterorite it would have created a much larger area than what we see.

The crater does look very weird, not the usual pic of a meteor impact.
Maybe the source is geological and something was blasted upwards.

Any way, I'll wait for those scientific survey results before speculating further.

You would think they would know if it hit an old landfill.

I'm still going with mass hysteria. A couple people had the flu, looked at the site, got sick, etc.

How so ? Would a 10 centimeter meteorite create a larger hole than the one on the picture ?
Also, meteors don't have to produce explosive impact craters. Sometimes they form impacts pits with the approximate diameters of the pit being the same as the respective meteorites. Therefore if this was indeed a meteor it will be recovered, at least partially, from the impact pit.

it could have been an afterburn shock from a meteorite...maybe the whole thing burnt up and only a shock heat wave reached the ground.

Nope, that wouldn't explain the odor. That's a pretty geologically active part of the world. The odds are in favor of it having rupturing an underground deposit or crack that contained a lot of sulfur dioxide. That stuff is very noxious and makes people sick immediately. It can also kill.

And it wouldn't be the first time, either. There was an incident just a few years back where a lake had formed inside a low crater of an extinct volcano. A large amount of sulfur dioxide and CO2 had collected in a pocket deep below the surface and was held there bu stratification. One night the water 'turned over' relaesing the gases. It wiped out an entire village just below the crater.

There was an episode on the National Geographic channel not too long ago in which the researchers gave a full documented account of the event.

    oh yeah, I saw that.
Maybe it wasn't a meteor at all. Maybe there was just a large gas release explosion and they thought it was a meteor. Wouldn't a meteor, large enough to make that crater, have been tracked?

At least they know for sure it was a meteorite now.

No larger than the crater is (30 meters) it whould have had to be a small piece of rock - probably 5 or 6 inches in diameter at the most. And no, they don't bother to track things that small.

I heard it broke a sewer pipe which poisoned the water supply. It's probably just a cover story so people don't panic about the space virus.

According to a calculator on NASA's website (sorry, I can't find the link atm), a 1m diameter meteor coming in at ~20km/s and 45 degrees would make a ~20m crater. But I think you're right, they wouldn't bother to track it. Software probably filters out anything that doesn't match the profile of an orbiting satellite or an incoming ICBM. This was headed for _Peru_, and who would bother attacking Peru. No offense to any Peruvian's who may be present.

Here is an interesting take on it. It would certainly make more sense than a meteorite in some ways. The geologist's analysis would have to be disproved however, which is hard when only such vague details are given.

Yeah it probably was SS-1 `Scud' (R-11/8K11, R-11FM (SS-N-1B) and R-17/8K14) missile test gone amok.

Now that I think of it, was probably it...Peru bought the missile in 1990's and tested it now, a defect perhaps?

There is no more evidence for scud missile than for the meteor.
Actually there is more evidence for the meteor, because of the report that meteor rock bits have been found.

Of course that's unconfirmed (analysis of one geologist), but so is the Peru's purchase of scud missiles (speculation), even more so - testing of them.

Personally I still think there's too little evidence to lean either way.

yeah but meteor sickness...I don't remember in human history for something like this to have been documented.

The sickness didn't have to be brought to Earth by the meteor.
It could be bacteria or chemical waste, or gas in the soil that got disturbed by the impact.
Look at the photo, the soil doesn't look very sterile.

i hope someone took a air sample near crater
if so the answers to this mistery could be in that air sample
    for now its all speculation
with all the press it bound to be studyed sniffed and dug up

Many strange and unexplanied occurences have happened before in the region of Puno. Some of the people have described observing strange people with tall and fair skin than vanish into thin air usually accompanied by blue and orange balls of light in the sky. Villagers living in and around Puno have a legend which say that these mysteries have to do with ancient gods which once came from the skies in pre-historic times and created life on this planet.

Read all about this legend and the secrets of the strange rock doorway which the villagers of Puno believe open a portal to the coming of the gods.
