The poll was posted to compare the beliefs of the sciforums membership with the beliefs among non-scientific types in 'America' as polled by the Gallup organization. The only 'scientific' application is to see if this supposed 'scientific community' varies much in beliefs compared with the masses.

I only have a problem with "less advanced", anyway I voted for Human beings evolved from less advanced forms of life, and God played no part in the process. obviously

And indeed the 44% were right. That claim is definitely false! We did not evolve from less advanced= primitive forms of life.

What's the point of comparing bogus poll results with bogus poll results.

the earth is only 6 thousand years old, and god created humans roughly 400 years ago.

how can somebody believe that humans are a new species when we have old bones to prove we existed so far back in the past?. also some egyptian pyramids pre date the earths age.

There is increasing controversy in Turkey (one of the more secularly influenced and Western Islamic countries) right now about the teaching of evolutionary theory, with most religious Muslims in Turkey apparently thinking it contradicts the Islamic faith and the teachings of the Prophet.

Only a minority of biology teachers in Turkish schools present it thoroughly, and it is being written out of the textbooks, combined with Creationist arguments, etc.

Aside from some details of timing, context, etc, orthodox Islam has, in general and in practice, responded to Darwinian theory approximately as fundie Christianity has. In Turkey, this involves explicitly borrowing entire arguments and approaches (including translated educational materials, books, pamphlets, etc) from the Creationist movement in the US. Perhaps the wording is aimed at a certain demographic? I'm not sure how Muslims or Hindus would answer the poll.

Depends on how you define Genesis. The Bible is very different from the Quran in this respect.

I could not choose any of the options.

 

You might just as well reduce the poll options to:

Clearly, if one believes in God, one believes he played some role in the creation of man. Some will take a literal view, others will take a more metaphorical/allegory view of the story of creation given in various religious texts.

Believing in God is no reason to deny science. Quite the contrary. Just as you know a man by his work, you know God by his creation. The more we learn about the nature of the universe, the we learn about the nature of God.

 

I think the proponents of Intelligent Design deserve the right to speech, maybe no to be given a platform re. Sciences but during Relgious class.

If only to make them less boring....I never went to a RE class in my life. One week of passing a Bible around by rote and then reading from it was quite enough!!!

Seriously. I thought that xians and jews and muslims shared belief in most of the early parts of the bible. Like genesis and such. Isn't the god of abraham the god of all of these religions?

 

The Quran has more in common with the Torah, much of which is inaccurately represented in the Bible; ask any Hebrew speaking person, Like TDI.

Um...isn't that statement a little misleading? Was this poll only supposed to be answered by the religious, or do we have to believe that for a deity to play no part, he must still be present but just idlying quietly over in a corner of the universe?

 

That was point, too. If you believe in God, of course you believe he played a role in the creation of man and the universe.

Of course they don't. Since the "ultimate" origin of the cosmos is a complete unknown (it probably just "is" - eternal past, eternal future) you can assign any agent you want to it.

 

The God of Abraham is the God of all men and women no matter their religion--or lack of religion.
