I think it's hard to genuinely dislike one another here. I despise some of the personas that I have encountered over the years, but it's hard to imagine that these façades reflect accurately the real people involved. Any number of people I've argued fiercely with over the years would probably be quite fun to drink with. Of course, if their personas are to be believed, they wouldn't drink with me.

None of this suggests I understand the motives of their deceptions, but rather than holding it against them, it's cause for sympathy. As Rilke noted, "We are unutterably alone, essentially, especially in the things most intimate and important to us."

I couldn't possibly guess as to the answer, except perhaps to figure that I'm not alone in separating the persona from the individual behind the façade.

Besides, haven't you been paying attention of late? I'm apparently a horrible person, so maybe S.A.M. just has awful taste in people.

And one correction: It would be more appropriate to say that certain people, if their personas are to believed, probably wouldn't drink with me. They never actually come out and say it that way, so I'm left to infer from their hostility.
