I think the dates\timeline may pose a problem for evolution.

My conclusions:

1. Neanderthals WERE human. Obviously this would mean only slight distinctions in appearance, which brings us to number two.
2. Modern man survived based on mainly one thing- Physical appearance enhanced their drive and desire. The bottom line is we can be controlled, we can be controlled psychologically. This is a common trait even today, Why isn't this acknowledged? reticence or inability to grasp the magnitude of our narcissistic inclinations. I have concluded that survivability is based on less tangible abilities and more on raw emotion.
3. Intelligence- Unchanged. I base this on a number of things, rest assured this is easily proven.
4. Be pragmatic.

Meh. The concept "Species", being an arbitrary human definition, is not really as consistent in nature as we would want it to be.

Regardless, they don't have to be the same species to interbreed. Look at the Liger and the Tigon (both variations of tiger-lion cross-breeds), the Wholphin (whale and dolphin), and the rare Grolar (grizzly bear and polar bear).

Most likely, the examples of Human-Neanderthal cross-breeding are examples of very rare occurrences, much like how ligers are rare in nature. They were, almost assuredly, not the standard of the day, to say the least.

 

Hell, look at the mule.

It turns out that Bornean and Sumatran Orangutan can interbreed and their further apart then gibbons and chimps
