Money is only paper. Why do we let it affect our lives so much?

Money is not just paper ...it's exchangeable for things that we want and need. If you had no money, you couldn't eat or have a place to sleep or..... See?

Money is not just paper, ...in the same way, say, a spear is only a sharp stick! Anyone can carry a sharp stick, but the one who knows how to use it for hunting game will have something to eat! Big difference.

No, money is just paper. It's only an idea that it's exchangeable.

Deeds can be used to represent land. If you sell a deed, you have sold land, but. Deeds are used because we cannot carry land and just give it to somebody else when we sell it.

Same with money, in my sense, money is used to represent how much work you did, and what your work is worth. You cannot carry work with you, but you can carry money.

If you work to plough a field a plant and sow every single seed, you used work, and the reward from the work is spent on the spot ( you eat it, or give rent, ect). But if you sell it, the money you get is used to represent the work you have done, and you can use the "Stored" amount of work later ( to eat, or give rent, ect).

Money is only valuable because we think that it is.

No one wants the money for its own sake, they want all the things that they can get with the money. Replace “money” in your question with “luxury, power, and useful material goods” and I think it becomes pretty self-explanatory.

This silly notion pops up every so often. Obviously, the people who say things like this are either non-thinkers or just want to start idle chatter.

Money is real and very useful - it's a common medium of exchange.

"Let" it affect our lives????????????? Do this experiment: try living for a year without any (and THEN talk about it being only paper, if you can).

Pussy is only valuable because we think that it is, too, but that don't make pussy any less valuable to us, does it?

Any man could live perfectly well without pussy, but most young men have pussy as the center of their universe!! So ...it's valuable.

Now ...as you get older, you realize that pussy ain't really valuable at all, and you've been foolin' yourself all along.

Because it can buy you anything that you desire.the real problem isn't the money but the greed that goes into earning it.

As your volume of green paper goes up, so does your freedom.

Do you like being lead around by an imaginary force called money?

What would be the difference if all transactions were done with trade goods or products? I give you a chicken for a pound of good beef ...does that mean that, in that transaction, I'm being led around by the chicken? Or the beef?

I can eat the chicken and make a burger out of the beef, but I wouldn't want to eat paper. You don't have to be poor to refuse to chase money. You could be born rich.

I think I understand what he's getting at.

Money is just paper (or cotton linen, if you want to be technical). It's what's behind it that makes it valuable (or it used to be).

You can make a believeable conterfeit dollar bill, take it to a store and get something you want for that fake dollar. Even though that "dollar" was meant to have a value and it was traded for something of value, it in fact was worthless.

So what's the big deal? You didn't have to prove that dollar was worth anything, it just was (or was thought to be). It's not the same as having, say, a car and going to someone else with a car and offering a trade. Those are physical objects with obvious worth. The dollar is just "officially" said to have worth.

Oh, I think we understand very well what he's getting at. The thing is, every few months someone comes up with this same nonsense as if it was some sort of recent "discovery."

But what most of us here are trying to get across is that, in fact, money DOES have value - in it's usefulness. One could just as easily say that a wrench is just a fairly worthless piece of metal - but it's a tool and when used as such has value, just like money.

The foolishness of this "worthless" approach is easy to see. Let's assume that you work in a factory that produces nails and that you are paid in their product - nails. Would you rather carry around pounds and pounds of nails trying to find someone that would take some of them in exchange for what you want/need (like food, clothes) or just a few pieces of paper that can easily represent the value of a ton of nails?

Same with pigs, if that's what you produce. Want to take a couple of them all the way across town to try and swap them for a pair of shoes?

And yes, I can also see the point that the pieces of paper are no longer backed by gold, silver or whatever. But the REAL point is that it's readily accepted by everyone as having value and because of that it's VERY handy to have. So the whole "worthless" bit is rather stupid right on the face of it.

I understand all of that; in reality money does carry with it a value.

But you can take a real dollar bill, backed by the Government, worth $1, and a counterfeit dollar bill which is worth nothing and get the same result with both. Therein lies the problem. In that scenario, the genuine dollar bill doesn't REALLY have any worth as the fake dollar can accomplish the same result without any monetary loss and with no monetary value put into it. In that way, the fake dollar bill is actually "worth" more than the real one as you can gain without any loss.
