The man who used gunpowder in a long steel tube to shoot a small projectile into the body of another person! We don't know who he was, but he sure has been influential, ain't he?

These are all fine suggestions but we need something more substantial. Come on folks think harder...

When nuclear weapons destroy most of humanity in 2135, we will acknowledge that Einstein was the most influential person in history.

Did he really invent atomic weapons? That's like saying fire being used as a weapon is the fault of cavemen. No, I'm afraid Einstein had little to do with the ABOMB as anyone does with things far removed from their time. The truth is someone, somewhere, invented the A-BOMB but it wasn't einstein.

The bomb was just a technical matter after Einstein discovered the basics.

Discovering the basics of anything does not mean you're the cause of it's usage.

I'm sticking with Gutenberg. The proliferation of the written word changed everything. The Protestant Revolution would have fizzled out, the Age of Enlightenment wouldn't have happened and the works of Shakespeare would have died with him.

Einstein did much to impact modern history, for certain; but most influential person ever?

No, i worked with him, he owned a couple of houses and a corner shop, but
he did not have much influence.

Actually, that's not a bad nomination! Make it the man who figured out how to make alcohol rather than just beer. In reality, he influenced more people than anyone else in history ....and is still doing so!!
