we can guess. our imagination is the most powerful tool we have for answering this question.

simply, how can anything exist. why would anything be here? the more we stay on track and tackle the direct question the better we will do,

is it possible for us to comprehend and understand the father of all answers??

    peace.

Because of causeless chance (atheism) or God (theism)...

Well, an equally valid question would be "why not?" With all the physical laws in place - as they have been since the beginning (regardless of if you're religeous) - why wouldn't things exist?

yes that would be a valid question, but thats not the question is it. just saying "why wouldent things exist" is pointless and is not even a attempt at answering the myster, that is lazy.

    peace.

No, it's not lazy at all - it's the opposite side of the very same coin. In fact, I believe it's even more to the point. There simply isn't any reason for things to NOT exist and we have proof of that all around us - everywhere. And while that version of the question DOES have proof to point to, the original quesion has none at all.

erm yeah thats nice but can you answer the side of the coin im talking about please. its easy to say what you just said we all know that things exist and we have proof of them existing.

your post is as effective and worthwhile as holding out an apple infront someone and saying, "look its an apple, this apple exists" yes your just stroking some chin and avoiding the hard question that we dont have an answer to.

    why would something exist?

Let just me give a side of a coin.

Not any coin, actually not a coin at all.

    Why does anything exist?

    Why not? someone said.

I say, it's fine that things exist.

    Not why not.

    Not because.

But because it is fine that things exist.

You know your own answer partially. You are fine to exist.

And yes, there isn't much more to it.

What would it matter to not exist?? Why would anyone think about it?

We must exist, not because we do, but because it is the best.

There is probably some argument about that last one, but let's take that in the religion section.

Why does there have to be a why for something to exist?

I'll answer your question if you can answer mine.

because of cause and effect. something happens because something made it happen, things exist so something must have made them exist. and if everything is infinite and all energy always existed in some form. then maybe thats 1 attempt at an answer to my question, things exist because they have always existed without a start. is that what people are saying?

do people not like to tackle this question? do we skip the really hard ones these days? what is wrong with trying to think of a philosophy to explain existence? has true philosophy died in modern times?

why do things exist. is anybody going to actualy try?

    peace.

No, it's much more effective and worthwhile than that little example. I'm talking about reality - you are asking about some metaphysical, philosophical idea. A question to which there is NO answer and can NEVER be answered. Just empty, worthless rhetoric is all you'll ever come up with on that one.

In my opinion, people don't like to tackle this question because you simply can't answer (at the moment, if ever). Why, you could have a room full of 100 people talking about it for weeks and weeks, and I'm sure a lot of ideas will be exchanged, but when it comes to progress towards an answer to the original question, you'll be right where you were in the beginning.

How can you apply cause and effect to existence? Cause and effect happens because things exist. As a law, it applies to things within existence, but you can't apply it to existence itself. My wording sucks, I know. I'm sorry I can't explain it better.

our imagination is more powerful than the things we have created, with our observation and understanding of the universe combined with our imagination and mind we can come up very good guesses at why anything would exist. whats the harm in trying?

i have noticed something, as the development of science has advanced the quality in philosophy has gone down,

how can you say that for sure? if the universe and all energy/space are infinite, energy could be a continual transformation that is eternal. so cause and effect would make sense without a missing link. and the problem is ofcourse that if something happened then it must be the effect of something else. its a cycle that cannot be broken or it stops making sense,

just because people cant understand and fully grasp anything "eternal" it doesent make it false. if you break the cause and effect cycle on either of the 2 sides it doesent make sense, like the chicken before the egg. or the egg before the chicken,

By what are you measuring power?

And if something is eternal, there is no cause for it's beginning. It's "existence."

Chi, can you imagine (nothing) total nothing, no mass no energy, no space?
    What would no space be?

I see some flaws in the questions. First and foremost, there is no evidence that 'nothing' (i.e. absence of everything / anything) exists and the implication is that 'something' has always been around.

Knowing this, the first flaw is that the 'how' question assumes there is a process for the building of 'nothing' into existence; however, such a process isn't real if there is no 'nothing'.

The second flaw is that the 'why' questions assumes there is intent behind the existence of everything. It is the result of anthropomorphization of reality (i.e. 'God') and there doesn't appear to be any sentient life form 'intentfully' making reality.

    im measuring power by potential.

and yes thats exactly what i was just saying, if the universe is eternal then there would be no cause, so that is an answer to the question. one that does not conflict with cause and effect rule,

so you agree. but are there other answers that comply with cause and effect law?

    peace.

i dont think i can picture nothing. simply because logic to me is cause an effect. my brain understands cause and effect law. and nothing existing goes against that law because it breaks the cycle of cause and effect,

Sure, I never denied the infinite thing. But it doesn't explain your original question, the why. And my point was that you can't use cause and effect to justify the existence of a "why."
