why is the turing test classed as a consciousness test by some? it doesent remotely even prove anything. also can one even say the word "intelligent" when dealing with machines? because as far as i know not a single machine has intelligence yet,

A computer or the Google site can do a lot more than a one year old human child. Then who is intelligent? May be we need new definition of what that means.

i doubt that, i could walk when i was 9-10 months old, i could say and undestand words when i was 1 years old.

are you telling me this computer actualy consciously knows what a word means? if it actualy knows something and understands it then that would mean its conscious, cant a 1 year old child pass the mirror test? i thought it could, can this computer?

The Turing Test is a reasonable test. It basically says that if you can not tell the difference between the responses given by a human and/or a machine, the machine has achieved conciousness.

but machines have not achieved consciousness yet.....

if i asked the machine to stop typing back for a second, and dial my phone number to speak with me personaly for the rest of the testing session, it wouldent know what the hell to do lol.

what does the word conscious mean to you guys? has it lost its real meaning along the way somwhere? because it used to mean knowing your own existence and bieng self aware. and the turing test does not prove intelligence or self awareness a single bit,

all the turing test proves is that computers can do what they are programmed to do,

There is a big difference between intelligence and self awareness.

All computers are intelligent, thats why computer scientist created the terms Artificial intelligence, or Human like intelligence. The Turing test is designed to find human like intelligence. A monkey would fail the Turing test while it is clearly intelligent.

Self awareness in its simplest is just a feedback loop. A air conditioner with a thermostat is self aware, and it knows when to turn off and on.

thats not correct information. no computer is intelligent. and an air conditioner is not self aware lol. thats funny stuff.

this is what intelligent means according to wikipedia.

"Intelligence is a property of mind that encompasses many related abilities, such as the capacities to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language, and learn. Although intelligence is sometimes viewed quite broadly, psychologists typically regard the trait as distinct from creativity, personality, character, knowledge, or wisdom."

and a computer is not the above, thats one thign a computer just cannot do, "think in abstract form" it can only perform functions that is according to its programming.

Thats just saying that a computer will never be a human, and I would agree with that.

Same goes for you. You can only do what you have been programmed to do via billions of years of evolution. Do you believe that the group of atoms you are made of somehow has some magical property that only humans can posses.

    Computers are the ultimate abstractors.

no its like saying a computer is not intelligent, and a computer is not self aware. before we derail into a further discussion, we should resolve what is here before is first of all.

could you show me any source indicating that computers are self aware, intelligent and conscious? because i already have facts that humans are conscious self aware and intelligent.

Is there an age limit for the human on this test?

he could be a computer wait until he calculates his answer,

I wouldnt say the turing test could classify conciousness, nor would I say that any current computer is really self aware. It is in my opinion that a computer could be classified as conciouse when it gains true emotions, and could thus make a true decision, not based on a random number or statistics (like it could answer questions such as "What colour of hat should I wear, red or blue?" without any significant background knowlege by wich to come to a purely logical or rational conclusion)
This would probably make computers less rational, and able to make actual errors (not ones as a resault of malprogramming or bad input) But also capable of true decision making.
So I think the Turing Test isnt a proper methode, and there are a list of problems with it in the Wikipedia entry.

As for calling a computer intelligent, it is a correct use of the word, however not in the same sense as a human is intelligent (dictionary.com definition:" Computers. pertaining to the ability to do data processing locally; smart: An intelligent terminal can edit input before transmission to a host computer.") ; the meaning changes with the context. The two can't be mixed and compared (less you compare apples to oranges under the title 'fruit') thus one cannot properly say that a computer is more, less or equal in intelligence to a human.

Perfect example. Suppose you found out someone on this board you respected and liked was actually an AI. Say Sam or Fraggle turned out to be an AI. If after all this time you couldn't tell the difference between them and all the humans, would you still say they were not self aware or concious?

yes, because no computer is self aware or conscious yet. just because it can fool somebody over the internet does not make it conscious or aware,

for it to be conscious or aware it would have to be aware that it is posting on an internet forum. wich it would not.

It's the best test of consciousness that anyone have been able to come up with so far. It's not like conscious things emit consciousness radiation that we can detect with a sensor or something. Obviously it's not a perfect test, but it’s the best we can do at the moment.

OMG! Wait until a woowoo (mis) reads that... we're gonna have a spate of "consciousness radiation" threads very soon.
You fool, you've given them ammunition.

Erm, the Turing Test consists of talking to "them"... that's the idea.
