first of all get a good firewall. zone alarm free is good.
also ad aware is free and good.
spyware blaster is also free and good.

    some free virus scanning sites.
a couple of them require IE.
    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
    http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
    http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

after you scan your machine download the zone alaem, ad aware, and spyware blaster.

    edit:
DO NOT download any codecs. most of your trojens and viruses come from sites that require you to download a codec to veiw their videos.

I recommend Avast Antivirus, Zonealarm firewall and Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

This is what I had. I removed Zone Alarm, because I had problems with it (my PC was real junkie with ZA installed).

Anyway, Avast has solid resident scanner and it could be replacement. Important thing is that it won't slow down your computer drastically. Also it recognizes most of nasty programs, even in small traces, very well.

Now, I have only Avast and Ad-Aware and so far, everything works fine.

Spyware Blaster is also good free program.

Outpost firewall has good reviews as well.

how many codecs have you installed to view videos?
never, ever download codecs except from sites you trust.

believe it or not i don't own any anti virus software.

Don't pay for antivirus or antispyware software. McAfee is crap and Norton is bloated beyond belief.

I'm using Ad-Aware SE Personal and AVG Free, but there's a whole host of other free programs that do a good job too. I only have to do a spyware scan once a month, and even that just turns up some cookies. It really comes down to your surfing habits, never open any kind of executable file if you don't completely trust the source, never install anything an ad banner tells you to, never download screensavers, cursors, smilies or other "neat" things...

Common sense is the best anti virus tool

The only things you should need are Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Hijack This, and Avast or AVG.

Run Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D, and then if you are still having problems, run the antivirus. If that fails, run Hijack This, and post your log file here.
