Hi, I know this has been done and I have nothing to boast about,
but my sis showed me this website, and those stats are beautiful.

    http://www.speedtest.net

    Here are mine:

I'm going to upgrade my connection to 5mbits next week, because my ISP is upgrading all accounts for free if you ask for it. I don't really need that much speed, but the potential is nice to have, especially while updating my Linux distros.

Oh, and suprisingly Latvia is in the 3rd place in the world in speed according to that website. http://www.speedtest.net/global.php

It's very surprising and me and my sis can't figure out why Latvia is so high as it is.

Apparently the demand for pornography is particularly high in Latvia.

This is one of the things that is a bad joke here in the U.S. I live ten miles outside of a fair sized city in California. My only internet options are 28.8 dial up, or satellite. I finally had to break down and get the satellite connection, because I couldn't stand trying to web surf at 28.8 anymore. Satellite is very expensive, the latency precludes online gaming (I was able to play online with dial up), and if you exceed your bandwidth limitations your speed gets choked down to below dial up for an extended period of time.

There are no plans to ever have cable or DSL here.

Just take in mind that those are kilobits not kilobytes.

Can't you connect to a mobile phone network?
    They offer that in Latvia.
For 40$/month you get up to 3.6mbits unlimited. You just have to buy a special network card and can connect to the mobile network that covers 98% of the country with your PC or laptop.

Not yet. And, even when available, the plans I've seen here have some serious bandwidth restrictions.

I'd move, but I'd have to pay probably twice as much in rent per month as I do now to move where I'd have access to a broadband connection.

When I visited my brother, who lives in Wichita, I was amazed by his cable internet speed. It makes the internet a whole different experience. Especially when compared to 28.8 dial up, which I still had at the time.

Frankly I thought better of the USA. I realize that you are a vastly bigger country than Latvia, but you're also a lot richer and advanced in technology. At least, that's the picture I have.

Market forces have written off those of us inconveniently outside of range. If it were purely about market forces, many rural areas in the U.S. still wouldn't have electricity.

The phone company has been granted a monopoly in exchange for being heavily regulated. In my opinion, they aren't keeping up their end of the bargain. The telephone infrastructure here dates from the late nineteen sixties, which means very poor dial up speeds (as I said 28.8 max, and I've been told by phone company technicians that this is considered good for where I live) and no DSL availability. No doubt AT&T are lobbying the state government to keep from having to upgrade the infrastructure. I'd imagine a few campaign contributions here and there are pennies on the dollar when compared to being required to upgrade their antiquated hardware.

This is what I get for $60.00 a month (and it cost $600.00 for the hardware and installation).

In Estonia (1 country North) there was a serious talk a few years ago to make access to internet a part of their Human Rights law. I don't know where it went from there.

I came to the realization that measuring internet speed is pretty much impossible. Anytime when I compare different websites, they give me such a huge spread (50-100%!!!) that I don't know whom to believe...

OK, Speedtest.net gave 12455 kbps and

http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ gave 14547 kbps, and these results are actually pretty similar... Sure it depends on the measuring site....

That's why you (all interested in comparing speed) have to use the same site/test in order to have a meaningful comparison. And your speed will vary depending on the amount of activity on your ISP.

Agree. You have to use the same server, because they are in various parts of the world.
The best thing to do is to use the closest server.

From speakeasy.net Syzygys I got 3085 DL and 368 UL from the NYC server almost identical to my last test using a server in Copenhagen.

I don't know what's up with the ping, but not bad for $40 CDN a month. Could be a lot faster though
