I agree with all of the above. Look, lots of artists have decided giving away things on the internet is good for their careers (see the band Arctic Monkeys, who used the internet to build a fan base and land a record deal). But it should be the artist's choice whether they participate on the internet or use it to distribute their work — not a bunch of cheap fans who want their products for free...

It's not about how much money people make as I've argued again and again. They could make billions or trillions. That doesn't mean that taking $5 or 10 or a 100 isn't stealing, legally and morally. The amounts are unimportant. All you're trying to do is rationalize illicit acts. You and Sam have failed time and again to put forward any argument or answer my three simple questions. I'm done here until you do, and I think any reasonable person can see the two of you for what you are.

 

You might as well give up, countzero. I agree with you 100% but you are talking to young bums who will turn into old bums - the kind that will steal anytime they have a chance. It's very clear that they are dishonest and no one is going to able to change that. They just think they've found a tiny little loophole that they can use to justify stealing - simple as that. If it steals a million bucks or a penny or a tune, it's still a crook.

No, it's not. Stealing is as old as humans and it will never stop. Just takes on different forms when something new comes along.

 

I'm talking about the technology, not the stealing. Try to see the bigger picture. Have some vision. You're witnessing birth pangs. Rest assured, the corporate billionaires you defend so keenly will take control eventually, and spoil it for everyone, like they always do.

 

I'm not defending them any more than I am the struggling artist who need to be paid for his/her efforts. If they want to give away their work in the interest of promoting themselves, fine. But eventually they will need to be be paid for what they do - just like anyone else.

 

And by the same token I'm not defending the thieves. I don't feel the need to. I'm just pointing out, quite dispassionately, that it's thieves and mavericks who are driving the technology on. And that, when the powers-that-be finally gain control, as they will, and when people start to feel limited, trapped and cheated by that, as they will, it'll probably be thieves and mavericks again who drive things on to the next plateau.

And on and on we'll go: small rebellions and minor victories which capitalism will neatly package and sell back to us. All part of the process.

 

And I agree completely. It's a never ending cycle.

I think that the "thieves and mavericks" are also the industry's largest consumer base. Sales of movies went up, not down after the introduction of the VCR, which allowed people to make and distribute copies. The slight increase in quality when you go digital doesn't make that damn much difference.

However, if the RIAA and the MPAA keep going with their money-grubbing ways, they will create the disaster that they fear by alienating their best customers.

One thing I know, and don't ask me how I know, I just know, is that a lot of people who download also have large tape and disk libraries and wind up spending more money getting large sets of things like TV series.

I agree that theft is bad. but as they say I have lent my friends books and they me. I have given books to strangers on the bus and in the army because i was done with them. Why should my lending or giving away a product that I bought legally be a crime. It makes me very irritated that if i buy a legal copy of a song that I cannot use it for a ring tone. I bought the product it is mine to lend or use as I see fit. The anti piracy movement seems to be about making me pay multiple times for the same product and that is wrong also. I do not purchase battery opperated devices because it annoys me to have to make a continual investment to enjoy a product that I have purchased. The internet makes it far easier to loan people the items that I have purchased. but with the exception of music I prefer to own a legitamate copy because I am not a thief. When it comes to music they play microsoft and bundle a bunch of songs that I do not care about with the song that I want or I can't find the song on usual sights then I will borrow the song from any one or where I can. The computer is only an improvement over cassettes. That is why the music industry is not in serious trouble. If it continues to harass the non pirates with various schemes of shady ethicicity to protect their greedy money making rackets then they will be in trouble. I do not appreciate being told that I have to purchase the same product three times or I am a thief.
