Similarly, do you think everyone should be able to perform maintenance on their cars, televisions, toasters, and microwaves? Should everyone be able to perform surgery on their family members?

And it runs Photoshop and MS Office, is inherently more secure by the very nature of not running the default user as admin, and has a full Unix backend.

About three years ago, I took an iBook with me on vacation, and did a bunch of C coding. When I got back to the office, I hooked it up, moved the files over to the 64 bit HP-UX mainframe the client was using, compiled without making any changes, and was done. I couldn't have done that w/ a Windows machine, not without some substantial tweaking.

That's why I like Macs. It's idiot-proof, and still retains the full power of a UNIX machine if I feel like accessing it. Ubuntu is getting really close to being on par, and honestly, if GIMP took a few steps forward, I might switch to Ubuntu for home use.

But Windows simply needs to be cooked a bit longer. (edit: though it does have its cool features as well. .NET is pretty cool, and Vista is a big improvement under the hood, though alot of cleanup still remains)

 

To add insult to your own injury, przyk, I said "as advanced as a computer". Especially since you need only read for less than a few hours in order to prevent your computer from ever being damaged. Sans more malicious attempts. An antivirus, and antispyware, as well as firefox, will be about all you shall ever need. Knowing how to use these programs simply takes a week or so.

All in all, this is not as intimate a knowledge as surgery on your family members. By the way, I know how to fix my car, toaster, and TV. The microwave has never broken, though.

This is not so much security as..not very useful in any line of work I can imagine. I only ever use the Admin. account, since I've full confidence that with whatever mistake I do I can fix it (and in the past ten+ years of my computer use, I can't say I've ever come across a problem I cannot fix).

Ubuntu, you say? I'd advise against it, I've used it myself on occasion. It's high resource use is an instant turn-off. I much prefer how Windows runs to Ubuntu, and I've yet to find a linux distribution that I'd care to bother with.

I fail to see why you want your personal computer to be idiot-proofed.

Under the hood, perhaps. Above the hood, however, it's a hulking massive pile of...horrible nightmarish things. The Digital Rights Management is enough to make me puke. Other worthless features, like the 3D view, only serve to bloat it's operations even further, and provide almost little to no alternative functionality.

Make no mistake, windows is doing what it should never have done: "More Features". It's only layering on massive features in order to appease the majority jerkfaces. As opposed to really improving their OS towards more efficient ends. Vista, by resource hogging use alone, is definitely not efficient.

 

Because even with a degree in computer science and 6 years of professional software development under my belt, I'm often still an idiot.

Then when I tell you that I've been running each of Firefox, Spybot S&D, and Avira AntiVir on Windows 2000 for at least a year now (the first two nearly since I first bought my machine), perhaps you'll think twice before exhibiting such a patronizing attitude toward people you don't know?

I take interest in how my computer works, can keep it in one piece just fine, and can learn how to use new applications quickly and usually with little or no help from a person or manual. I don't expect everyone to be like me, though, and I don't consider the need for technical knowledge evidence of a well designed system and interface. This is where we differ.

 

Any way, who cares, it's just an OS. Whatever floats your boat.

Yes. You want a computer idiots can use, while I want a computer that is as efficient and productive as imaginable.

I use AVG.

 

AVG is somewhat falling behind in the past months. Or so I've continually heard. You should try Avast, as it's a bit cleaner to use then AVG from my experience. I advise everyone to at least try it, as I've never seen a more efficient AV.

I merely shrunk your opinion into what I've been saying, apologies if it was an inaccurate one.

The problem is the majority of the market for computers consist of people that call tech support and ask them "how do I turn my PC on?" Therefore, businesses take it upon themselves to make computers largely targeted at simpletons with a 2nd grade reading level.

Because of this, you get computers heavily overbloated with stupid "features" that third party programs already provide in a much smaller and efficient manner (Example: Windows Firewall vs. Zone Alarm). This makes more computer-savvy users very ill, in that the OS becomes less of a useful tool, and more of a hindrance.

The current trend that Microsoft uses, is to appease the stupid masses with little effort to provide the tools or information the more advanced masses need. Thereby making the most cash with the least effort. While this is a shrewed and "wise" business choice, it bodes ill for the rest of us.

You've convinced me to avoid Vista like a plague.

 

EDIT: I have added a spew of links at the bottom of the post that agree with my stance on Vista. I wrote a lengthy article on why not to buy vista on another forum, but it's outdated and does not convey what I can now. There are hundreds more links, as well, which you can google. I advise that nobody ever buy Vista, as it's as bad an OS as I predicted it to be long ago (ironic, isn't it?).

Good. I'm trying to get people to avoid vista. As I am boycotting further OS's spewed by MS altogether.

If you aren't a Windows user, then at least spend some funds to buy 2k. After it's updated and accustomed to how you like it, you'll find it a very formidable OS. As it's the last half-efficient OS that microsoft might ever produce. Quite sad, really.
