But again, why model the brain?

The brain operates on neural "wiring," capable of sending signals at a pathetic crawl compared to electric impulses on a computer chip.

It's slow, messy, and mired in psychological neurosis linked to being raised a mammal: you're shot out of a warm place, confronted with large beings with bright lights, brought home to the realities of a human family.

I mean every human parent fucks up their kids somehow...

Too loving, too patriarchal...whatever. We're fucked.

All I'm saying is that you'd be better advised to contrive an "intelligence" from the ground up, unlimited by all of the problems that have evolved with human intelligence.

It's as if we have this wonderfully powerful computer on which is installed a fantastically flawed, utterly labrynthine operating system that has been fed every "NEW UPDATE!" and Microsoft bug-laden install ever created...

Take your own computer, feed it cookies and spam and Bill Gates shenanigans for 5 billion years...

    Or start from scratch.

I agree. My point was simply that if nothing else, even if the field of AI research never makes any more progress, given a sufficiently powerful computer it should still be theoretically possible to get a computer that thinks and makes decisions like a human by simply modeling what an actual brain would do. I was mainly responding to darksidZz's claims that we would never be able to make a computer think, so we might as well stop trying.

We need first to know how the human brain works. lol

Hence the hypothetical "advanced scanning instrament" in my original post.

when robots will start to ask questions and make decisions then they will be called androids.and i dont think that brains are necessary because you can easilly put more tan twice info into 200gb hard drive than human brains could.Brains would be needed in that case if androids had feelings and emotions, without this only good operating system has to be developed.

    I'm afraid it's a simple fact.

The human brain is not merely a data storage device, unlike computers the brain acts as a transitory device for action. It allows you to form thought processes but these are not based on computer chips. Biological components form the entire framework of what consiousness IS, there's simply no way they can possibly produce this using computers, now or ever. The sad truth is the idea of Androids is doomed from the start... now get over it and believe me

Biotech is going to be the next big wave of scientific advancement.

I think we will see "biocomputing" take off in the next few decades. They could replace your heart with a machine in the 1950's, so why not replace part of your brain with a biochip in the next ten years?

Alzheimers, Parkinsons - degenerative nerve disease is afflicting more and more people now than ever and billions are being spent on research.

Surely there has to be a computing component to this emerging medical field.

A biomachine that can think is probably far off in the future somewhere, but integration with existing hardware is already possible.

    What about cochlear implants?

Would not Biochips be vunerable to bacteria, fungi and viruses?

Some good points all round so far,
As someone split evenly between materialism and panpsychism, i dont really have a problem with the idea of a machine having consciouness.
Panexperimentalism states that consciousness is a process formed by the inherent interiority or 'isness' of matter - which creates a foundation for emergent systems of ever increasing complexity to generate ever increasing awareness.
So to me it makes absolute sense that a machine could have authentic consciousness, it's just re-ordering the already 'experiencing' matter into different combinations to create new expressions of creativity and awareness.
I think quantum computing also raises some interesting points, there's a thing called retro-causality in the quantum 'world' which from another vantage point could be viewed as predeterminism or precognition with equal validity.
This opens up a huggge can of worms in itself, im pretty sure quantum computing is going to give rise to far more than simply faster processing power.
The particle(s) could quite litterally perform a calculation before youve even hit enter, its all theoretical of cause but it is a distinct possiblity.

Just my opinion here, If anything we see in Sci Fi is remotely possible, then it is possible to merge humanity and machines together. Put a mind from a dying body into a mechanical one, we already have biotechnology which will become a booming field soon.

On a side note, does anyone think, our world is getting more complex? As the complexity increases, how does that affect our ability to solve problems since our brain has not evolved much in the last 4000 years....

The fun part is that the dumb people will be getting down the food chain, ie. more complexity the more importance to people who can handle those things.

You are all wrong :shakes head: there isn't anyway to save you from your wrongness... in the future there won't ever be machines capable of thinking... how do I know this?

If machines could think they'd eventually come back in time, then we'd see them all around us everywhere, they would likely come to stop us from bothering them, hence none are here so they never gain consiousness.

    Goodbye

Assuming time travel is possible, of course...
But machines ARE around us everywhere...
Or to ensure we're on the right path to build thinking machines...
Hence we're on track for their dastardly take-over plans...

time travel is like mass murder in my oppinion. but this is about human conscious and not time travel.

YOu simply cannot mimick the human soul, dperession, happiness etc. these things may be able to be programmed, but it will eb artificial, the computer will be responding to words from someone or actions they percieve it will always be completley artificial, and you certainly cannot mimick the human soul.

True, you can not have human soul in an android. It will be android soul...

    Is human awareness possible?

Before you say "yes, of course," consider that perhaps you were just programmed to say that, just as I was programmed to type this right now.

Perhaps we are aware of nothing and there is nothing to be aware of.

Perhaps this one moment is all that ever existed and the illusion of being alive, being aware, of being human, physical and so on - all of history, religion, science and everything just came to be a moment ago - and in another moment it will be gone.
