So did Americans 50 - 75 years ago. You touch on the problem and then skip past it to blame the Western world. The change is urbanization not westernization and it's a function of economics, not ethics. If you need to blame someone you should to look to the Middle-East and the cradle of civilization because that's where it started, English factories only increased what was already occurring. The problem with urbanization is not materialism but stress. Too many people living too close to each other tend to isolate themselves socially. They also tend to exhibit other "abnormal" behaviors associated with stress (again we find such things are reflected in animal groups as well). Certainly family and community support is beneficial. Probably more so than the psychiatrist's couch. But it's not a solution for those with true neuro-chemical imbalances or severe psychological breaks. And while the western world turns to pharmaceuticals and television those without access turn to ritual and traditional remedies. It's simply another facet of the same quest for a quick fix for our symptoms. Of course, the real answers lie a bit deeper. ~Raithere
