Well how can you measure if they are self-aware and conscious or if it is only made to appear so, like someone taking an action figure or puppet and making it appear as if they're talking, walking, thinking, etc...?

Also a lot of sci-fi fans get caught up in this science fiction BS, it'll never happen...although there will be computers that replace the jobs of millions (thankfully). Humans will finally be free at last from all work, free to enjoy life...

    Yes exactly...

First of all, just because you can not measure something today, does not mean it will not exist tomorrow...

Second...saying that "it'll never happen" just shows a bais or mental block or even the inability to model the new paradigm, the nature of reality. In this case, it is pointless to argue with one since the understanding would not be bothways.

It is like discussing "System Dynamics" or Fourier Transform or Bayesian Network with an English Major.

I base my thought that it'll never happen based on rationality, my own personal opinion (basically), its just like how those sci-fi fans said in the year 2000 everyone would have flying cars, or computers would crash, I never believed in that BS based on rationality.......

Also most likely when we figure out what consciousness is, it will likely be limited to us, animals, and other living entities only....

That is defintely acceptable in the philosophy section....

yeah but in the end we do have cars and we do have personal planes. We also have computers and occasionally they crash and at best we get the day of.

. And I can agree that I also never believed a word of y2k.

However I don't think that you can figure out conscioness. I'm not that good in biology but it's proven that their is a blind spot in everyones eye, so the brain fills that little space by simply guessing what's most proberly there. I rather believe that's a good concept of conccioness. You see a bit of the world around you and you can focus on a couple of things but the rest is pretty much patchwork altough it's defenitly there.

Androids will never exist, it is impossible, you are all wrong (except those who votes 'you're right)

So you think androids will be our willing slaves? Heheheh . . .

Fourier Transforms are a socio-political construct to disempower the time domain and pretend all is morally-relative 'frequency'. Without time there can be no history. Ergo, Fourier Transforms are a tool of the Man / Military-Industrial Complex to keep the worker ignorant and abused :bawl:

    Sorry, wait, that's history major

Yeah basically...there's no doubt that computers will replace many jobs and eventually no one will really need to work, except for a few people who need to regulate things, it would be like a utopia or communism basically....I think this will happen around the 2700s...

What are the key substances/structures that you think allow consciousness?
What do you think makes these substances/structures qualitatively different from metal, plastic, etc?
What if we made a machine out of the same materials?

Well IMO, there is an undiscovered thought-energy behind consciousness...eventually it'll be fully discovered and recognized...

If you made a machine using the materials that cause consciousness then the machine really will be conscious....otherwise it won't be...pretty simple logic

    A more frightening scenario...

The human species develops such a creation, equal in intelligence, capable of reason, and it can all fit on a chip the size of a grain of rice.

Line it up in some complex array, performing multidimensional calculations a trillion times more complex than the simple arithmetic we are capable of performing in our brains, and we have basically developed a life form to replace us.

It is not inconceivable to consider that perhaps such a life form, realizing the threat that humans (inefficient and energy-hungry as we are) have become a burden and it is reasonable to exterminate them (us.)

The human body does use an incredible amount of engergy, given that it has evolved to do the work of hunting and gathering and maintaining large tribes and families, fighting off other tribes, battling disease and so on.

An intelligence free of such limitations would certainly be more adapted to life on this earth than the rather cumbersome homo sapiens.

What about an analogous form of information processing, the result of convergent evolution?

    Birds fly. Flies fly.

Different mechanisms, different evolutionary paths, same basic function that is beneficial to survival.

Perhaps "consciousness" itself is only our way of doing things. That's what evolved for bipedal apes with complex social groups and complex sexual behavior.

    - sexual behavior, by the way, has a lot to do with human emotion, the development of a distinct "self" and so on.

What about intelligence developing in an asexual species? No mother, no father, no dead relatives to whine or cry about - just pure intelligence existing amongst something akin to a colony of bacteria.

Well... if it's super intelligent surely it would see that bio-organic life cannot be exterminated completely. Perhaps then it would determine we should merely be helped to change.. also it might realize it can better locate and utilize materials than we are able.. it could just exist and try helping

Use an advanced scanning instrument to perfectly map every neuron in a human brain, then feed the data into a computer with enough computational power to model the behavior of each neuron on the molecular level. Such a computer would be able to calculate how the brain would think about a problem or react to an input. Perhaps you could argue that this sort of computer-modeled brain wasn't "really" self-aware, but if it made decisions in exactly the same way that a person would, you would never be able to tell the difference.

The behavior of any physical system can be calculated and modeled based on physical laws. Unless you believe that there is some non-physical component to the human brain, or that the brain somehow does not obey the laws of physics like everything else in the universe, it should be perfectly possible for a computer to model one.
