I've never been quite sure what "alternative" means, and some of these posts aren't helping! Garbage and the Foo Fighters were all over pop radio. "Head like a Hole," "Three Little Pigs" and "No Rain" were staples of MTV. "Creep" is the tune my favorite bar band plays for snuggle-dancing. All those grunge bands? Uh, grunge was really, really mainstream music!
Excuse me, one question, what does alternative mean in relation to music? Is not all music an alternative to another? Or is it a specific style? From here mentioned I have heard only Nirvana and Green Jelly. Does alternative mean rockish? edit: oh... just read Fraggle Rocker's post Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Courtney Love "Doll Parts" Veruca Salt "Seether" Gin Blossoms "Hey Jealousy" Alice in Chains "Rooster" Offspring "Self Esteem" Nirvana---most of the Nevermind album Pearl Jam "Alive" Man there's too many to list.
Yeah, but it was invented by grungy guys who you wouldn't want your daughter hangin around. Some people figured out how to package it and sell it, but at it's heart it's still a long haired pot head in a flannel shirt with a beat up Fender stratPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
MTV once was alternative. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I agree. But, in the early years, before grunge became favourite exploited phenomenon, it was quite strange mixture of sounds and influences. True alternative respond on mainstream bands of that time. Later, it became full of copycats of copycats, and that was really annoying. But, since subject of this thread is 'best 90's/alternative songs', grunge songs definitely must have place here, because 90's were their time. My alternative will always be music that makes my heart beats faster, and when I speak about that music to someone else, I will just get 'never heard-don't know what you talkin' about' look. Rusty Cage -- Soundgarden. I'm The Man '91 -- Anthrax. (Sorry- I'm putting 'em down as I think of 'em!)
To me, "alternative" music was what came out in the mid-1960s, when we were bogged down by the first wave of Corporate Rock. "Piece of My Heart" by Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin's band) absolutely sounded like it was from Mars. I couldn't believe anybody could get those kinds of sounds out of a guitar, and even now as a more-or-less professional musician I'm not sure I could work out the chords without a chart. The British bands were certainly breathtaking, and ultimately I came to favor British music over American by the time it morphed into Black Sabbath, Renaissance, Roxy Music and Gentle Giant. But with a few startling exceptions that early British Invasion rock and roll was way too slick and tight-assed, except when they were playing the blues, which was just recycled American music. When the airwaves were clogged with the Supremes, Sam and Dave, and the Four Seasons, it was groups like the Grateful Dead, the Doors and Quicksilver Messenger Service that provided an "alternative." Don't get me wrong, I like grunge as well as the next music lover, but I can't help grinning when I recall Bono's description of it: "70s music in plaid shirts."
