Roman, sorry to hear your on crack, a bad habit to be strung out on, it explains your thought process.

Yes the reason it is so costly is all the court challenges by the ecconuts, and it is still a fact that you have to survive the energy crisis of today to get to energy independence tomorrow.

You are misinformed. What really matters is carbon. You may not know that it is now possible to purchase offsets for the carbon you produce, for instance hundreds of acres of rainforest so it won't get logged. Gore claims, and is able to afford, carbon offsets for his entire carbon footprint.

Gore should set an example - why doesn't he have a windmill and/or solar heating etc.... Gods only know he has the money for it.

It is still no excuse. He may be able to afford the carbon offsets, but he is still a huge consumer of electricity. Has he not heard of solar panels? If his home is that big, imagine the amounts of solar panels he could install to reduce his own energy consumption, as well as buying the carbon offsets to save the forests. He is in a position to do so much and lead by example, but he has done the complete opposite.

I remember his coming to Australia and basically saying that if you care about the environment, you should be doing everything possible to cut back on energy use, primarily electricity since it is such a big polluter. Had his energy consumption gone down since he made the documentary, then I would be agreeing with you. But his went up, in direct contradiction to what he was advising everyone else.

The point is this. He has put himself in a position to be a leader in curbing global warming. Now in that position, he has a responsibility to lead by example. One does not lead by example by increasing one's energy consumption while hiding behind the excuse of 'I can afford to buy the carbon offsets'. What he can afford is beside the point.

All of us are intense consumers of energy, we should be talking about institutional solutions to this problem. As it is, you can't ride a bike around the world to talk about the problems we share, you need a jet.

Clearly, everyone has known the living conditions of rich people in the US for a long time. This is a transparent attempt at character assassination on the eve of Gore's big win and the Oscars. Straight out of the playbook, I think they are afraid of his popularity.

They are. They have yet to come up with a popular rightwinger. America hates them. Elections were but a glimpse of the contempt people have for this corrupted, arrogant failed administration. If Gore ran he'd wipe the floor with any weasel eyed rightie with no problem. Brains scare republicans. Their target voters are old church ladies, rednecks and white trash. But a person with a BRAIN is a threat to their culture of ignorance. '08 will be beautiful to witness unfold! The righties had the wheel for 7 years and never got us anywhere but into record debt. They accomplished nothing but cringe when someone proposes progress.

Sure, he's real popular, in Hollywood, Berkley, Boulder, Austin, New York, and Boston, that's about it.

Spidergoat: "you can't ride a bike around the world to talk about the problems we share, you need a jet."

I'm not so sure about that. Gandhi didn't even need a bike.

Some more than most it seems.

Therefore if he wants to change that mindset around the world and around the US, he needs to change it at home as well.

Don't get me wrong, I adore that he has done this documentary and I commend him greatly for what he is trying to do. I am a huge fan of Gore and pretty much always have been. But even I recognise the hypocrisy of his actions compared to his words.

And he has been. But why has he not implemented those solutions in his own home?

Why, since the documentary was made, has his energy consumption increased instead of decreased? Why tell people to use less energy when you are using more yourself? They are valid questions.

We aren't talking about his use of a jet. We are talking about the changes he is begging all implement in their own homes and he has not done the same. Instead he has done the complete opposite.

So because he is rich, he should somehow be excused?

On the contrary, because he is rich, he can afford to make the changes, that he demands of others, in his own home.

    You're kidding right?

The man is pushing himself forward as a protector for the environment. He wants to stop global warming. He criticises others for their energy consumption. Now, as I said before, if his energy consumption had decreased since the making of the documentary, no one would have said anything, or if anyone had, we could point to the fact that he is trying as well. But his energy consumption has increased.

They need to be afraid of his popularity.

However he (Gore) should be even more afraid of his own popularity. Because if he decides to run on a 'stop global warming' ticket and this is made known to the general public, he could find himself being ridiculed and flayed by the public and the media and called a fraud. If I was Gore, I would be doing everything I could to lower my own energy use at home, by installing rain water tanks, reducing the use of electricity by installing solar panels and trying to get himself off grid or as being near off grid as I can.. basically he should do what he has told others to do.

There is no excuse for this kind of hypocrisy. Saying 'well it's how the rich live' is definately not an excuse. He has placed himself in a very bad position by being the champion against global warming and then at home doing the exact opposite and increasing his own contribution to the problem instead of decreasing it. Seriously, what in the hell was he thinking?

Spidey's right. People are far more impatient today.

A Gandhi today would be ignored as a crank.
