Yes, i think we can put this arguement at rest. This world is full of wimps now, and unless we change something dramatically, lets wish good luck to our offspring- assuming you guys have any.

Well, I almost agree. But instead of saying the "world" is full of wimps, you might want to amend that to say something like, "most of the WESTERN world" is full of wimps.

And interestingly, the wimpy nations seem to be the ones who aren't producing many offsrping ...wimpy offspring, I should say!

I think you people are confusing wimps with hippies. But yes, there will be a backlash as there always is. (Let's hope there are no "throwbacks," which are offspring born with the characteristics of distant ancestors due to inbreeding, such as the Lhasa Apsos of the 1970s with the aggressive temperaments of the ancient Tibetan temple guard dogs.) This pendulum swing is a characteristic of American culture. Drugs for sale in "drug stores" in 1890--alcohol illegal in 1920--smoking a joint on the bus in 1975--War on Drugs in 2000. No bare skin in 1900--recreational sex in 1925--strait-laced morality in 1950--Sexual Revolution in 1965. This irrational risk analysis and overprotection of children has been trending for about 40 years, it's just about due to turn around.

Europe's swings are much faster, they turn silly trends around in a couple of years.

Remember the experiments that proved learned helplessness? Shock a lab rat when it tries to do anything. Then it just sits in the cage and does nothing, afraid to move. That's the ultimate wimp. This practice is sadism. Expecting the rat to do anything after it's been treated enough times, that is unrealistic and insane. Only a defective, insane rat would be able to do anything.

The sadism part certainly did make me a wimp.

Do we really need to accept the term Wimp?

It seems to me this term tends to be used by people who when scared jump to aggression, chest-thumping, violence, dismissal, verbal attack, mocking, smugness.

It seems like most societies somehow move these guys, usually guys, to the top of things, in industry, in government. Thus they have more power.

It seems to me this reponse to panic is not braver or less wimpy and actually causes a lot if not most of the problems out there.

You must be a wimp, huh?

You must be a wimp, huh?

Criminals love wimps who cower in fear and willingly hand over their valuables, and do nothing to protect themselves or their families or their friends or their societies or their nations. Wimps are good for criminals to flourish.

Move which guys? Who are you talkin' about ....wimps or normal people?

If you're trying to say that wimps are in charge of things ....please give me some good examples of that. I'd be highly interested.

Yeah, if wimps were in charge of things, there'd be no problems .....the wimps would just roll over and let the strong do anything they wanted to the nation/company/corporation/family/or whatever they were in charge of.

Your defense of wimpiness leads me to the conclusion that you're a fuckin' wimp! Which does, of course, make you in the great majority!!

OK, then what was your point? Who knows what % of the listed things exagerated your wimpiness.

I like much better and promote the whiny-pussy generation as describing the after 1980 born kids. Please feel free to use it...

Funnily enough, you are exactly the type of person he was referring to in his post.

And then you have the aggressive macho idiot who would confront an armed gunman in his home and attempt to defend said home and goods (mere objects), putting his own family in danger. The result? He and/or family members end up hurt or killed. And Baron, criminals love it when the person they are attacking fights back. Rapists sometimes will beg their victim to fight back because it makes them feel that little bit more powerful to bash their victim and control them that little bit more.

You equate anyone who is not aggressive as being a wimp. When the opposite is true. You see anyone who does not use brute force in the face of adversity as being a wimp.

Why are you being so defensive Baron?

He meant society tends to move the aggressive and attacking person into positions of power because those individuals have basically bullied their way there. The result? We are left with people who do not have the intelligence or the ability to recognise that being aggressive will never get them any further because they are then faced with people of a like mind (eg aggressive) and no one backs down or is willing to negotiate to a more suitable outcome. They wish to dominate all around them and subjugate others to their whims.

Yep. You are exactly who he was referring to in his post.

What makes you think he is defending the notion of 'wimps'? He was merely pointing out that the way people view or interpret the notion of a 'wimp' is to view them as being the opposite of the aggressive, opporessive and bullying type. As he says, it is those who are aggressive, oppresseive and who bully who would be the one's to actually use the term 'wimp'. And he's right.

What is a wimp to you Baron?

Wimps are the men that you would have to check between their legs to make sure that they are men. Nothing wrong with being a calm, non-agressive person, and it doesn't mean you cant be a non-agressive non-wimp. On the contrary, the best in society are exactly just that. but they are not wimps!! You can stand up for things and tell things like they are without having to beat someone half dead.

That WAS my point. My point is that wimps can be made. The idea that no one can make a wimp out of a person is just a facile dodge and it is patently wrong.

I find it interesting that you equate a wimp with being a 'male' who is somehow unmanly, as in a eunuch.

    ---------------------------------------

Personally, for me a wimp is someone who shirks their responsibility. It is not based on the individual's sex. For example, I would consider a parent who walked out on their children because they were too much responsibility to be a wimp. I have a friend who was married to a woman who by all accounts was a really nice and great person. They had a child and by the time the child was 5, he was diagnosed with autism. She walked out on that day because she 'couldn't cope with having and taking care of a "retard"' (her words as she walked out). She, to me, is a wimp or more to the point, a coward.

Throughout this thread, I have been seeing people define a 'wimp' as being someone who is somehow not masculine and not 'butch'.

OK, so we agree. Actually, pretty much all of us agree here, just it is hard to realize.

Anyway, this thread is getting boring. Again, the future of wimps would be more interesting topic, since we clearly established, that yes, today's generation is a bunch of whiny kids.

Well,my guess is that first they will live with their parents way longer than they should. Second, the kids of the wimps, I don't even want to think about that...

OK, here is again the real life story. 20ish wimp having a kid. The only way she can spoil her kid is that she is sucking the life out of her mother, who screwed up raising her up in a decent way. But this circle has to stop somewhere, because the provider generation will cease to exist at one point and the leeches will have nobody to suck lifeblood...

It could be hard to sell the idea that the sadism and domineering that I experienced was the act of a wimp, but I think that sadism comes from weakness and weakness is what defines a wimp.

Even being the "provider" and having the kid live in the basement after he is 18 is being the wimp, being someone who has to wear the guise of the tough person at all costs. The "provider" role in this kind of relationship is forced on the one who is less powerful, like when some terrible tot realizes that kisses can be used to bully and hurt. This kind of provider isn't often going to be able to hold someone and make that someone feel safe and loved. In fact the victim feels in constant danger and like the life force is being sucked from him or her. The provider is likely to be stingy in some way or another, but the area of stinginess is calculated to create a shortfall in the ability of the victim to care for himself. An adult child could get fed morning, noon, and night at his mother's place, but then he has to sleep in a crappy trailer and can't work because he lives in a godawful little down and isn't allowed to use the car to drive to work, and his mother didn't take responsibility to make sure that he got his driver's license, even smirking about it when he approached the subject. Any teachings are in the negative.

So what is the victim provided? He is provided the opportunity to die slowly while his life is being sucked from him, and he becomes a wimp because someone can control his movements and force it from him. The provider even seems to actually believe that her ability to control his movements is because of a fault in him, even though she has made it plain that she will kill him if he deviates from her plans for him, either kill him or make him effectively dead, and has managed to get inside his head enough to destroy any efforts of his from within. All that providing for the person means is that the mother has decided to use her "generosity" and "caring" as leverage, and has also decided to drain the life from that which she gave life to. A weak person does not understand why he or she should give strength to a child, and may not understand that constantly attacking, undermining, and unfairly criticizing the child will weaken anyone, even an avatar if such existed.

In that way the devouring parent actually takes away the ability of the child to act as a normal person, and the child has to either go below or above. Those who are above are balanced on the knife-edge and have to keep expanding to try to keep ahead of the draining and corrupting influence. Those who are below are more comfortable because they don't have that far to fall and the balancing act is not nearly so draining.

I wouldn't say the society is wimpish, I'd say that we sometimes cater to people and things that are otherwise unecessary and stupid. The law is replacing morality and responsibility in some irrelevant situations, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but then we ignore certain consequences and right of humanity.

It is law by the lowest common denominator. Read Kurt Vonnegut's short "Harrison Bergeron" for a shocking prediction. Yes it could get that bad.

Here is another example that I heard today. There are severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado watch in my area til 6 pm. Most all of the schools closed when those came out. I found out because I overheard one of the women here say that she had been emailed by the school where her son attends.

I busted out laughing. Closing schools because of thunderstorms. Jesus, that is pathetic! I have never heard of such an asinine thing. I graduated high school in 1990. We continued throughout the day, thunderstorms or not. We rarely closed even when it snowed.

Give it another 20 years and schools will close when it rains because the students might be in danger of falling on the wet walks.
