I guess I'm used to it but there are cool people here in the Outback, you just have to spend some time here to find them. Lawrence is a liberal college town with lots of lefties and frat boys chugging beer to Kid Rock, not together, just simultaneously! KU = Snob to many. If you ever come back hit Westport, the Plaza bars, the Crossroads District and SW Boulevard. Also some nice clubs Downtown. Those are generally Redneck Free Zones. And fyi, none are predominantly gay, so no worries.

The Outback is in Australia, not Kansas. Sounds like an identity crisis? My negative impression came from the college snobs and not the elder locals. We received lots of great hospitality and good down-to-Earth conversation with everyone at the Holiday Inn I stayed at in Lawrence and at the Fairgrounds. We held our 2004 Norwegian Elkhound National Competition there and they really catered to our needs: all that dog hair and all, they didn't care one bit.

I used Outback because the US Midwest is the Outback of North America as far as backwardness, low population and general remoteness. (Do I sense nastiness?

    Okay.

Now that zenbabelfish has thoroughly made an ass of himself, I think I shall finally define "manboy" as I used it.

Oniw17 responded to a post from madanthonywayne about Carlos Mencia's thoughts on homosexuality, saying that he definitely likes girls. Redarmy11 responded with the remark "And ladyboys", which I interpreted to mean a male who looks effeminate. Thus, I responded with the question "And manboys?", which was intended to mean males who look masculine. I was attempting to make the point that men who are attracted to men aren't always attracted to the effeminate ones.

That was when zenbabelfish went crazy and such, and that's a whole nother story.

I think Zen is just strongly opposed to pedophilia and this led to a strong reaction.

I don't think he made an ass of himself. He reacted strongly and was then pushed to react even more strongly.

It happens all the time on internet forums.

well, being strongly opposed to something doesnt justify accusing people of felonious behavior, does it?

i mean...im strongly opposed to violence, so does that mean that everyone that has ever looked at a weapon of some sort must be a murderer?

Not "nastiness" but saying "KU = Snob to many" is just reconfirming my experiences there with the snobbish local college kids. I don't know where Westport and the Crossroad District are but the frats seemed to be around the near East-side going of town before you go out toward the Fairgrounds. Like I said, the locals at the Holiday Inn on the North-side were all very cordial, helpful and friendly. The suburban area on the East-side out of town and around the Fairgrounds seemed like your traditional All-American type of place with well-kept housing areas and nice people. But what's with the snobbish attitude amongst the college students? Kansas drinking age is 21 so where do these frat boys go to chug beer? One girl - a college student- even went out of her way, very condident and assertive, to give me very precise and articulate directions to the AAA office which turned out to be an old rundown abandoned shopping center way out on the Northeast-side off the freeway. I didn't appreciate someone misleading me out of town, wasting my time with an arrogant little trick.

If you spell Outback with a capital "O," that's Australia. Even without the capital "O": "outback" means "isolated rural country esp. of Australia." This is the first time I have heard Kansas called the Outback? Is this just a fad?

Kansas is the “Heartland” of the U.S.: a Midwestern Great Plains state with a topography of flat green fields and crops. Nothing too much special about it that I know of? Originally lots of Indians, settled by easterners that migrated West into the Great Plains, and named from the Siouan word "Kansa" meaning "People of the south winds."

I don't mean to stereotype or put down your heritage and stomping grounds but you're really just reconfirming my experiences there. Next time I visit Lawrence or Kansas City I'll be sure to check out the West and Southwest areas that you mention. Thanks a lot.

Seems to me like a metaphor, and quite a fitting one.
