IBM ThinkPad z61m - Problem installing Win XP Pro

Hi,

I bought an IBM ThinkPad z61m laptop computer yesterday.
The operating system installed is Windows XP Professional German.
I wanted to install Windows XP Professional English today (I disabled the whole protection system), but everytime I run the setup it says that the hard disk cannot be found.

Has anybody an idea?

Probably not - but you never know, do you? Try what draqon recommended and, if we don't hear back from you, we can assume that things didn't go too well.

OK, I'm definitely no expert - I expect one will be along later - but I'd probably go with what draqon says. However, I'd be sure to back up any important documents first (since it's a new computer I assume there aren't too many of these).

But don't be too hasty. Hang around a bit, then take the advice of someone who sounds like they have the faintest idea what they're talking about.

 

Harddrives are identified by BIOS first, unless they have a controller card Identifying them instead (Like a RAID Controller).

I would suggest checking your BIOS settings first, if the automatic (usually default) detection of the harddrive isn't working then you might have to place the correct data manually).

I would also suggest if it's a new machine you start with a clean install, however I would suggest checking the IBM website out to collect the drivers/software for your particular model as you might not be able to connect the machine to the internet during it's installation process, so it could save hours of mucking around later.

(If you do decide on a clean install, I would suggest having a disc loaded with partitioning and formatting software that runs from boot, since an errored installation of XP can require third-party intervention for cleaning the harddrive. It's notible that it's usually the "Setup"/update method that has the failures over the clean install.)

I had to set the SATA mode to "compatibility".
That was all!
Windows works just fine!

And if none of that works, try going into the BIOS thingy and setting the wotsit mode to "compatibility". That might do the trick.
