hey guys, I didn't want to start a whole new thread for a stupid question, so I will ask it here.

the place I work gave me reels and reels of parts that they didn't want, and I want to take them off the reels an put them into little baggies. my question is: is any old baggie ok? regular tiny zipper bags should work for the resistors and capacitors, but what about some of the ICs I have? should I be concerned enough with ESD that I buy special bags? or should I just use whatever?

p.s. anyone want to buy 2000 5v regulators? (just kidding, I am not selling)

well I would go on the safe side and get special foil-type bags to put all the electronics in.

By the way do you happen to have 10 2~5V voltage regulators? I would buy.

what about those pink bags you sometimes get stuff in? are they ESD safe?

    uhh what does "2~5v" mean?

I have like 2 reels of 5v regulators and 1 reel of 7v regulator. thats it for regs. when I get them all inventoried I can show you what all I have, if you want. I plan to make a google spreadsheet with part descriptions, part numbers, package, quantity, ect, so I can "share" it with all my engineering friends. that way they can use my parts if they make a mistake in ordering or whatever.

thats so humanitarian. How much does 1 reel of 5v regulators go for?

I don't know. its about 1000 parts per reel, about $0.25 to $0.50 per part. so we are talking a couple hundred bucks.

if you want like 10 of them, I will send them to you free if you pay shipping. I have a couple packages, I know 1 or 2 of my reels are SOT223 package, and the other is something slightly bigger, but still surface mount. also, I think the 7v are SOT223. I haven't looked at them real close yet.

I would vote for using antistatic envelopes. Electronic Goldmine has them for as low as $5.95 for 100. I don't think that the little piece off the reel can disperse a static charge quite as well as you need for it to.

I kind of wanted to get the clear dissipative bags, so I can see inside and write on them easier but I guess I can get some labels.

man, it felt like Christmas when they told me to go through 4 boxes of component, save 100 off each reel and keep the rest (at least 1000 parts per reel). when I found the first (of 3) reels of 5v regulators I could hardly contain myself.

I wish I could inventory everything tonight, but I have to go to Wisconsin tomorrow for work =/

You can always hold the bags up to the light. Any other goodies?

well, I am most excited by the 3.5 reels of 5v regs(about 5000 parts in all!) . I just found some 9v regs (about 400). damn, I have about 15,000 33pF caps! I have like 1500 4.7uF, 2.2uF and 10uf tant caps, and so on. I have about 40 reels in all. most of the reels are half empty, but half empty usually means over 1000.

so this is just business and not part of your microcontroller project?

its not part of the project. sorry, I didn't think it would turn into anything more than a post or 2, so I didn't want to start a new thread. heh, I just found a microcontroller in one of the boxes that is as old as I am =], talk about obsolete.
