Best Version of Vista

Which version of Winows Vista will you be using for your rig?
Please disregard the prices for the sake of this poll. If all of them were free, which one would you choose for your rig?

You mean, which version is the least crippled?

That would probably be 'ultimate'. Then again, I wouldn't be caught dead installing that crapware.

I'm not entirely sure. I'd like to use Enterprise, because I won't be able to afford Ultimate. But then again, it might be a while until I can afford Enterprise. So I'd say either Home Premium, or Enterprise. I didn't vote on the poll, because I really have no idea what financial state I'll be in when I switch to Vista.

According to this chart, Home Premium would be fine for me. However, is this chart really complete?

The basic Home version seems practically useless.

Edit: Looking again, I suppose one consideration would be the difference between Meeting Space and Business Networking.

 

According to that chart, I would say Business is the best, but the Ultimate might be the way to go.

The reason is that Ultimate has 1 thing more than business which is the bitlocker which is not important for an OS, and it has extra media center and photo garbage which has no business being on an OS unless you are a home user.

But really just to be sure, Ultimate would probably be the full scale version of Vista. I guess Enterprise is useless becuase it is not available retail anyway.

If you're just looking at being less crippled, it pretty much goes without saying that Ultimate would be best, followed by business, etc...

However, we're dealing with prices, not features.
Looking at the features that are missing from Home Premium that exist in Ultimate and Business, I don't really see them as being all that important to me.
The only question, as I've mentioned, is how this Meeting Space networking compares to Business Networking.

A point to note about Business is that it lacks the Media Center.

Ultimate has everything, but costs some 260 bucks upgrade.

Is XP worth ditching for a Vista? Seriously, I want to know. I doubt it is, but y'all are the experts.

I'd say yes.
XP is simply NT spruced up a bit.
Vista is a whole new ballgame from the ground up.
Sure, it'll have problems. And whiners will whine as they always do.
But, it is the new game in town as far as MS is concerned.

It'll be more hardware intensive though. I'm going to want to upgrade my machine before moving on. I'm on a crusty old 1.6 with 512 megs of ram. I'm sure it'll work but a lot of the new features will be disabled.

I find Channel 9 to be an informative source for MS happenings and Going Deep has many videos directly relating to Vista issues:

There are also video on the site on Vista that aren't in the Going Deep section. Going Deep is specifically about 'under the hood' issues. Interesting, but perhaps too deep for some.

Of course, I haven't been keeping tabs on all this stuff or I'd be more in the loop. Last time I went through these was several months back.

This is the exact reason I changed my desktop to ubuntu. I was looking at Vista versions deciding how much my wallet should be ass-raped in return for functionality and I finally snapped. "Fuck it", I thought, "why am I doing this?".
Why am I considering an OS that is years late, expensive as fuck and has no real new features when Ubuntu puts out releases every 6 months for free? And, for fuck's sake, they'll send you the fucking CD for fucking free. Awesome.

 

if i was able to run games on linux then i would ditch windows in a snap, but there is an unwillingness by game developers to create games that run on multiple platforms.

 

It's more complicated than that.

Microsoft has made it much harder for developers by not conforming to superior, portable standards like opengl. Of course, it's the business plan to keep users locked in and buying new computers.

That was my first reason for coming to Linux. In the end, I stuck with Linux because it is superior. People are slowly coming to their senses.

 

Enterprise is the best...bc its an awsome name...Star Trek: Enterprise...wooohooo!

 

i run a dual boot with mandriva 2005le. and ive never paid for windows, so its not like im supporting them. just waiting for the moment i am able to ditch them.

 

I'm afraid I'll have to get Vista, or I won't be able to use DX10. I might pirate it if my budget doesn't cover it, and I'm sure there will be cracks for the DRM.

), but i require networking and remote desktop to share with the server and the PC in the 'common area' (an office space in my house).

In the office, of course...Business edition.

Oh, and I agree with vslayer...Linux is simply not as versatile as Windows. No good games on that platform, and I haven't heard of a Linux HTPC box....

I'm not planning on moving my work machine to Vista for a little while. I like some of the changes, but Standard New OS Issues vs Vista Improvements is not currently balanced in Vista's favor, IMO.
Maybe after SP1, though, and after i've played with this whole "context menu drives 90% of functions" business. As a student of the Apple HIG, I don't like hiding user options behind context menus, but then again, I do see the logic in it for advanced users.
