i havent really thought about it yet but perhaps i will wait untill i buy a new comp in a year or 2's time.. then it will probably be shipped with it.

"That's a negative ghostrider".Most of what Vista can do, I have already on Ubuntu 6 - for free. Here's another reason - just last week, a mate asked me to revive an old family pc. It was Pentium Celeron 1, 333MHz, with 128MB RAM - a relic. Running Windows 98. By today's reckoning, it would be in the bin.

After looking around I settled on Xubuntu.
I could hardly believe how fast it ran.Or that it ran at all!
Xubuntu is basically Ubuntu with XFce as the GUI. Ingenious! is the best description at this point. The power of linux, & a GUI on diet. The eye candy is still there as XFce has heaps of themes out there. It would be great for laptops.

I currently run Ubuntu on P4 3Gig, 1,2Gig RAM, with all the 800MHz FSB, AGP 8X, latest m/board, etc etc - & yet while there is a difference in speed between mine & the 128MB PC, with built in graphics, mini m/board - it's not a $3000 dollar difference. Why, for common tasks i.e; email/browsing, letters, print & small programmes - you'd be hard-pressed to guess it's a technological dinasour.
This is a sleek, thin presentation of a fast OS.

So, emphatically,no!I won't be upgrading any longer unneccessarily. Infact, I have this cunning plan to use 1 other low-end pc instead lol. It will be a dedicated server for proxy,DNS, & the like. I currently use an xbox for that using XBox Linux.
Still working on trading in that MCSE for a linux cert.

True, apart from applications what use is Linux? Let me ask you guys this, I currently use programs like the following:

1. The Rename - Manages folder / filenames
2. uTorrent
3. RocketDock - Simulates dockbar from OS X
4. NGOHQ nVidia Optimized Drivers
5. The GodFather - Manages mp3, mp4, etc. collections
6. CCleaner
7. McAfee AntiVirus

Now you tell me, does linux even have anything remotely like this?

ofcourse, there is. Many different types of programs, applications, and media consoles.

What's FAR worse IMO, is their changes to the license agreement.

As far as I understand it Vista can be installed exactly twice, period.

In other words it can be moved once to another machine, and that's it.

The problem with that is: How does it recognize that it's a different machine?

Well of course, via hardware profiles.

So if your MB dies twice, you have to buy Vista again. Because microsoft is trying to provide a quality service for a fair price.

Perhaps the retail version of Vista will only be able to be installed twice but the copies that come with newly purchased PC's, will those? As far as I know OEM's of XP can be installed unlimited times....

Ubuntu, umm so you're saying this plays videogames like F.E.A.R. or Oblivion?

I don't think Linux offers much, from what I've seen it can't do anything except write documents / surf the internet, and bore the hell out of you.

 

How often does that happen? Unless you are pouring water in your tower.

Agreed though, only installing twice seems stupid.

 

I consider computer games a very unproductive usage of my time, so from that point of view I have no problem with Linux. And it allows me to do with it exactly what I want, not what some company has decided for me.

I actually found a Mac emulator for a PC. I could never get it to work.. but people used to to install Mac OS X on their PC.

 

I just installed it. Pretty wicked.. but it's only a Windows XP theme. I do not know if I can handle this very long. It's cute, but I am a windows guy.

 

Too true. That & 1 or 2 other apps keep me in Windows.

Oddly enough, my Xp theme is flyakite OSX. It's sleek, stable, updates itself, plays nice with the OS too. Can't recall running a theme this long.

That doesn't appear to be consistent with the extra minimum memory needed for the thing. I hear Vista is bloated. But then, my knowledge of Vista is now a few months old.

 

There's an overly complicated Windows library emulator that, when it works, works extremely well. Linux can usually run a Windows binary faster than Windows can (unless you have the misfortune of running Fedora or Ubuntu).

Operating systems are boring. What about something that lets you run programs do you want to excite you? Is a desktop with some icons and a pointer supposed to make me hard or something? Is Microsoft or some OEM distributing pr0n with new copies of XP now?

It runs thousands of programs, a fraction of which (you'll still have plenty to choose from) do everything you already do with Windows, if that's what you're asking.
