Zimbabwe May Let Whites Farm Again
    October 15, 2006

EAST LONDON, South Africa (Reuters) -- Zimbabwe, facing food shortages blamed partly on its large-scale seizures of white-owned farms, is considering allowing some interested whites to return to farming, a minister said.

President Robert Mugabe's government has received more than 200 applications from whites to take up farming again, land minister Flora Buka said on Saturday during an agriculture conference in South Africa.

As regards white commercial farmers, there are some who have indicated that they would want to continue farming," Buka told Reuters.

"Their applications are being considered. If they are willing to stay, that is also going to be considered. Also, the amount of land they have is also going to be considered."

Asked if the government was still confiscating land from whites to redistribute to blacks, Buka said: "Yes, we are still resettling our people on the land that is state land."

Many of Zimbabwe's white farmers have gone overseas or to other African countries after often violent land grabs backed by Mugabe, who initiated the redistribution program six years ago.

Industry analysts say only about 600 of Zimbabwe's 4,500 white farmers have kept their land.

Zimbabwe was once the breadbasket of the region and a net exporter of maize and other essential cereals to its neighbors.

But food agencies say the departure of experienced white commercial farmers has cut into agricultural output and exposed Zimbabweans to persistent food shortages. Meanwhile, a severe economic crisis has led to a shortage of foreign currency and surging inflation of more than 1,000 percent annually.

What is better: a) let commercial farming to grow more food using all the chemistry and oil in the world, until soil fertility and/or oil last. Grown food is being processed, mixed with yet more chemicals to feed ever swelling population of the urban slum dwellers without life, hope or the future. b) gradually developing small scale farming, no matter the temporary setbacks, learning curve and food shortages.

Since, choice a) is not a longterm option; since, the global collapse of the choice a) will result in the global societary collapse and dying off - Zimbabwe must gradually outlaw large landholding farms, no matter who's owner, white or black. Besides, cash crop farming in the third world is one of the leading causes of the abject poverty in the third world. So, to the hell with white farmers, unless they will be willing to farm 10-30 acres.

Yes, people who have historical experience with agriculture, those with farming in their ancestry.
Seems like a fancy way to say white people to me, but whatever, those are the times I suppose.

J.B imagines that skin colour determines farming skill.

    Not surprising.

Or maybe he just thinks that farming skills vary between races.

Um, I just posted the article I did not write it.

But if you wanted my opinion,
I don't believe at all that "skin colour determines farming skills" as you suggested.

I believe that intelligence determines farming skills.

What is not surprising, is that once again you want to focus your thoughts on me instead of the issue.

    Exactly.

Although - as long as Mugabe's in power - I think they'd be crazy to go back.

And how would one get this "experience" you speak of?

Well I havnt seen any research but I think it probably does to an extent. Just as the average black man seem to make superior distance runners and such. There was a split of races some 10s of thousands of years ago and the differences in environment must have lead to more differences other than just skin pigmentation to cope with different levels of sun radiation.

Farming experience? That's a tough one. Do you think it might involve farming?

It says nothing about farming skills being based on skin colour.

I believe that experience and training in farming determines farming skills.

    Ever thought of that?

We've heard your petty discourse on intelligence in its own respect.

    Therefore, by the transitive property...

As always, James, you focus on melanin content. Skin color has nothing to do with it. Forcable redistribution of private property is always a disaster, and morally repugnant. It is Mugabe who is the racist. Evicting experienced farmers from their land for having the wrong skin color and damning his people to starvation in the process. Brillant. Another victory for "affirmative action".

When Mugabe came to power a white minority of less than 1% owned 70% of the agricultural land. Clearly this couldn't continue. For years white farmers had the chance to sell up until the British government stopped funding the program. Many took the money and either left the country or re-invested elsewhere. Those that didn't paid the price for their stubbornness.

And now zimbabwe can't operate as a country. I guess it was worth "righting" the "injustice" of white people owning all of the farms?
Zimbabwe got fat off of that foundation of white farmers, before the white farmers zimbabweans were hunters and gatherers and the population was governed by nature. There's now way too many native zimbabweans for the natural bounty of zimbabwe to sustain, without white farmers most zimbabweans will starve to death. The vast majority, untill they are back in balance with their natural surroundings struggling to survive like wild animals.
I could have told mugabe this long before he came up with his brilliant scheme.
I'm ultimately all for it, but the same people who would have approved of the agricultural lands going back to the natives probably wouldn't approve of millions of people starving to death.
Hence why they are idiots with no grip on reality.

    The article says:

"Zimbabwe, facing food shortages blamed partly on its large-scale seizures of white-owned farms"

James, That means these farms are failing because they are not being owned and managed by WHITE people.

Why do you think the article even mention's skin color?

Do you think that "experience and training in farming" just falls out of the sky?

It takes intelligence to gain "experience and training in farming".

Were blacks better off under apartheid?

MORAL crusaders have the habit of heading off to their next crusade without bothering to see whether anything went wrong on their last one. During the '80s, TransAfrica, NAACP, Black Congressional Caucus, Hollywood glitterati, college students, and other groups held massive protests on college campuses and at the South African Embassy, built shanty towns, and called for disinvestment and sanctions against South Africa for its racist apartheid system.

There's no longer apartheid and there's black rule in South Africa, but what's the story there now?
