Ha ha! You're right, that is quite a difference! I must not have been thinking. After all, it is at least powerful enough to run such a bloated an buggy OS as Windows ME.

Athelwulf: If you want to convert it to an extra storage drive, what about just going internal? Do you plan on moving it between computers often? An external enclosure for it would cost around $20. Using it as an internal store drive, however, would be free, and only cost about 5 minutes of your time putting it in (and another 5 taking it out).

i hear alot about how buggy it is.
question:
where are all the bugs in winme?

the only bug i have found is when i play movies with powerDVD then close the app. and then try to go online. and this has only happened twice. in all probability it has something to do with powerDVD not winme

I have to decide whether I want to go in between computers or not. But most likely I won't need to.

I was about to ask about the danger that the drive would get infected with viruses if it was put inside the computer, but then after thinking about it, I guess the risk is the same with an external drive.

You know what... I've yet to actually attempt to crash that old thing again. Which reminds me that I still have to get the thing connected to the Internet. I think I'll go configure it now.

Well, I got a bug for ya. And I've only been running it for about ten minutes.

I just moved some stuff into the Recycle Bin, then clicked "Empty Recycle Bin". It deleted the stuff, but then the window became unresponsive and I had to end the task through Ctrl+Atl+Del.

It may have been just a fluke, but I tells 'em as I sees 'em.

 

Actually, I was running ME a few years ago, and I didn't start having problems for a long time. It seems to me that under normal operating conditions, it does just fine, but if you try to push it harder, or you have less-than-ideal conditions (such as a very full hard disk) then it just blows up.

 

like i said earlier i always had problems with winme after i ran the update on it.

personally i will never run updates on any windows installation i have again.

as far as the full hdd goes it will never happen cause i have a cd burner and a 18gb hdd. there is just no way i will ever fill it up.

one other thing is that i use firefox instead of internet explorer

(You do realize that you're asking for it. If you don't update your computer, then you basically have wide open security holes that practically any script kiddie can mambo right through.)

I used to use it too and actually really didn't have any more problems with it than 95 or 98.

But, I hear that the problem is a memory leak.
That is, the system doesn't free up memory like it should, and over time all your RAM gets eaten up and the system freezes.

 

Yes, back when I was running ME, I used to always get the "Warning, system is low on resources!" error message. I couldn't leave it running for more than two days without a restart.

This is a bad idea! It was probably just a one-time thing where something went wrong. You should always do the updates. There is a reason Microsoft offers them.

i have noticed my ip address changes.

i am also behind 2 firewalls,a nat router and zone alarm.
a hacker that is online and searching for open com ports will never find my machine.

as far as the memory leak goes i havn't turned off my machine in 3 or four days.

i also don't have any anti-virus software installed
but i do have 3 or four different antispywares and i use them all
i also have a system cleaner that removes useless and dead registry entrys and shortcuts. i hardly ever run this app. without it finding at least some problems.

when i first got my internet connection i had dialup
i always liked to download files and my cutoff was 12MB, not because it was a limit but because of the time involved. with my new high speed connection i average about 120KB/s.

 

First of all, I already have one and am using it on my newer computer. And I'm not installing software onto the older one, since there's little free space as it is.

Second of all, this is the same computer that I want to crash... There's no point spending money on it to make it work better.

 

Okay, so it's official: I got my WinME connected to the Internet. Where can I get me some juicy viruses?

Also, is there a way I can make an exact copy of the harddrive and save it somewhere? I don't mean a back-up, but a copy that could theoretically be moved back onto the reformatted harddrive – or any harddrive – and booted as if it were the original OS. Or alternatively, can the entire OS and all files be moved, intact, to somewhere else?
