    In short...

    In ascending price -

CRT (cathode ray tube - aka, old fat tv's)
    LCD (liquid crystal display)
    Plasma

LCD is obv what you're after, so you have a few options.

When you say Vizio, do you mean Sony?

    HD (High Definition) LCD's - come in 2 different resolutions - 720 and 1080
Then there are variations - either interlaced (every second line on the screen flashes at a different time - invisible to naked eye) or progressive (in order - not too likely to notice the difference, but hey - it's better apparently)

720 is more likely to be in your price bracket and most tv's you see advertised are 720's.

I'd try to stick with Japanese manufacturers if you can. Sony, Panasonic or Samsung.

Overall, there isn't much difference between screens, but what you want the most of is -

connections on the back - you want as many as possible
    decent length of warranty/guarantee
