i am willing to bet a thread like this exists somewhere else but since i couldn't find it, here we go:

post you favorite song lyrics, snippets or the whole song. and give credit where its due so we know where it came from.

mine currently happen to be the lyrics to a song called "like suicide" by soundgarden, from the superunknown record. i'm not sure why, but im into it recently -

Heard it from another room
Eyes were waking up just to fall asleep
Love's like suicide
Dazed out in a garden bed
With a broken neck lays my broken gift
Just like suicide

And my last ditch
Was my last brick
Lent to finish her
Finish her

Bit down on the bullet now
I had a taste so sour
I had to think of something sweet
Love's like suicide
Safe outside my gilded cage
With an ounce of pain
I wield a ton of rage
Just like suicide

With eyes of blood
And bitter blue
How I feel for you
I feel for you

She lived like a murder
How she'd fly so sweetly
She lived like a murder
But she died
Just like suicide

1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)
by Jimi Hendrix

Hurrah i awake from yesterday
alive but the war is here to stay
so my love catherina and me
decide to take our last walk
through the noise to the sea
not to die but to be re-born
away from a life so battered and torn....
forever...
oh say can you see its really such a mess
every inch of earth is a fighting nest
giant pencil and lip-stick tube shaped things
continue to rain and cause screaming pain
and the arctic stains
from silver blue to bloody red
as our feet find the sand
and the sea is strait ahead..
strait ahead.....
well its too bad
that our friends
cant be with us today
well thats too bad
"the machine
that we built
would never save us"
thats what they say
(thats why they aint coming with us today)
and they also said
"its impossible for man
to live and breath underwater..
forever" was their main complaint
(yeah)
and they also threw this in my face:
they said
anyway
you know good well
it would be beyond the will of God
and the grace of the King
(grace of the King yeah yeah)

so my darling and I
make love in the sand
to salute the last moment
ever on dry land
our machine has done its work
played its part well
without a scratch on our bodies
and we bid it farewell

starfish and giant foams
greet us with a smile
before our heads go under
we take a last look
at the killing noise
of the out of style...
the out of style, out of style

time - pink floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field, tolling on the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
And hear the softly spoken magic spell

So today a friend told me a sorry tale,
As he stood there trembling and turning pale.
He said, "Each day's harder to get on the scale,
Sort of like Jacob Marley's chain."

And it's not like life is such a vale of tears.
It's just full of thoughts that act as souvenirs
Of those tiny blunders made in yesteryears
That comprise Jacob Marley's chain.

-Bridge-
Well, I had a little metaphor to state my case.
It encompassed the condition of the human race.
But to my dismay, it left without a trace...
All except for the sound of Jacob Marley's chain.

Now there's no more story left for me to tell.
So I guess I'll just be heading straight for hell,
Where there's a snowball's chance that the personnel
Will have to carry Jacob Marley's chain.

yes yes i know, its russian rap, i love this song.

pink floyd -- wish you were here

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell
blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here...
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

TES YEUX NOIRS

Prends tes vêtements, he, tu as froid

firstly, let me say that people should try and limit their quotations to pieces of the song (say a verse) because some people (I for one) don't care to read 30 lines of lyrics to try and find what you think is cool about it.

anyway, I like this one from dylan:
--------------------------------
Mona tried to tell me
To stay away from the train line.
She said that all the railroad men
Just drink up your blood like wine.
An' I said, "Oh, I didn't know that,
But then again, there's only one I've met
An' he just smoked my eyelids
An' punched my cigarette."
--------------------------------

I think this one (also from dylan) is a perfect commentary of popular music (whether it be pop, rap, or country)
--------------------------------
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.
(the entire song is full of great lyrics, you should read them:
http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/itsalright.html)
-----------------------------------

I know a girl (sadly, not single) that makes me feel like this one from floyd:
-----------------------------------------------
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

(corny, I know)

Hey Momma! Look at me!
I'm on my way to the "Promised Land"!
--AC/DC, "Highway to Hell"

I love the way they play with words.

Or for goosebumps of nostalgia:

Somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away,
Looking for a home I hope she'll find.
But I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday,
Holding Bobbie's body next to mine.
--Kris Kristofferson, "Me and Bobby McGee"

It's about missing the entire era, not just the girl. The 1960s had to end because our women grew up.

Sublime...

Strong if I can
But I am only a man
So I take her to the can
Its the wrong way.

i love the lyrics to this song called "learning an enemy" by a band from Detroit called Thoughts of Ionesco. this is the best part i think -

think of me as you try to sleep. feel my will as you try to live, oh yeah. i want the pain, i want the black part of your life.

Cato: Interesting choice of Floyd - I always feel that A Momentary Lapse Of Reason is very weak lyrically compared to their other albums.

As for my favourites:
And everything under the Sun is in tune,
But the Sun is eclipsed by the Moon
or Echoes, or A House by Doves, or Coincidence by I Am Kloot...
It's just so hard to choose!

New blood joins this earth
And quikly he's subdued
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules

With time the child draws in
This whipping boy done wrong
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own
That never from this day
His will they'll take away
They dedicate their lives
To running all of his
He tries to please them all
This bitter man he is
Throughout his life the same
He's battled constantly
This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
The old man then prepares
To die regretfully
That old man here is me
