ethernet hub prob

  1. ok i got a lynksys 10/100 5 port hub and can't do a damn thing with it. how do i :

    1. set up an internet connection.

    2. create a network enable file sharing (both pc's have XP pro)

    one pc gets a connected by dhcp the other is assigned privately.

    The problem is unlikely to be the hub, unless it is broken. Do you have poewr lights and does the hub show each PC as being connected? usually a green LED is on when it is.

    To understand and help with the rest I'll need more details. What are the IP addresses, netmaksks and default gateways. If one is DHCP, the other not, how does it get a DHCP address? Is it in the same range as the other.

    Are they both in the same workgroup? Is one connected to the Internet, how?

    If you click on Network Neighbourhood, can you see both PC's?

    Have you enabled File and Print sharing to allow File sharing, you need both PC's to have the same usernames and passwords if you do.

    As thed said there is a lot to do and several ways to do it. I highly recommend you read the manual. Yes it is boring but it tells you exactly how to set up your system for your router. It is a must. Do not use dchp if you intend to share files on the internet.

  7. i took it back and exchanged it for a cable/dsl router which i might add works perfectly now. that'll show me to buy something tha the box has been tampered with
