A polynomial P(x) in the variable x is any expression of the form:

<math>P(x) = a_0 + a_1 x + a_2 x^2 + a_3 x^3 + ...</math>

where <math>a_n</math> are numbers called coefficients. The order of the polynomial is the highest power of the variable, which can be finite or infinite.

A polynomial equation is an equation is an equation of the form P(x) = c, where c is a constant.
