PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy (but see below).

A PhD is a worthless piece of paper. However, to get that piece of paper from a reputable university, you need to make an orginal contribution to human knowledge.

The fact that a PhD is worthless or that people with a PhD are stupid is a common theme on sciforums.

The number of PhDs trained each year is increasing. It is easy to increase this number and it looks good on paper. Structurally, however, no more jobs are created after the PhD stage of a science career. In fact, fewer and fewer permanent positions are available each year. PhDs are sadly undervalued.

PHD is also an acronym for:

  • Paper Hat Device
  • or Piled Higher and Deeper
  • or Propaganda Hourly Delivered
  • Penis homing Device
