WARNING - television is the root of all evil!

a term used in television. when the electron beam gets to the end of the scan line it must be returned to the left side of the screen to scan the next line. if this retrace was not blanked it would leave visible lines in the picture. so at the end of every line the signal is driven blacker than black. this pulse also provides the high voltage for the CRT anode and in color sets contains the burst phase for the color oscillator. it is also the syncing pulses for the horizontal oscillator.
