Charles Darwin is generally regarded as the father of evolution. He formulated his theory while sailing on the "beagle", but of course that is just what uneducated people think. He actually formulated his theory long after he came back from his trip.

Beards

Interestingly Darwin didn't sport a beard when he was young. This prevented him from being a real scientist. Only after he became bearded was he able to formulate the theory of evolution and write an excellent monograph on barnacles.
