Appeal to authority, AKA argument from authority, argumentum ad verecundiam, ipse dixit- an argument that predicates the truth of an otherwise unsupported assertion on the authority of the asserter. The validity of a premise does not follow from the authority of the source. Appeal to authority is the other side of the ad hominem coin: Ad hominem implies that a claim is false because the asserter, or asserter's character is objectionable.
