American Idol is a franchised version of a British TV show.

More Americans vote for American Idol contestants (and pay for the privilege) than vote for the President, which ought to tell you something. However given the result of the last 2 US elections, one has to wonder who is more moronic.

Affectionately referred to as American Idle.
