Second World War

The war that should have ended all wars. Unfortunately there has been continuous war after it ended. WWII was a war that involved almost every nation on the planet. The cause of this war had its root in the aftermath of the first world war. The war is generally believed to have started with the Japanese invasion of China. Hitler going into Poland might have had something to do with it too. Only a bit though.

Most notable among the many battles fought were:

• The Allied invasion of Normandy.
• The Battle of the Bulge.
• The Battle of Stalingrad.
• The Battle of Iwo Jima.
• The Battle of Midway
• The Battle of Britain.

The war ended when America deployed 2 nuclear bombs on Japan and forced her surrender. The Russians marching into Berlin probably helped too. Only a bit though.

Allied invasion of normandy

june 5, 1944 americans along with her allies of britain, canada, and australia stormed the french coast of normandy in the greatest amphibious assault in history. its been estimated that the germans killed 70% before we broke out of the beachhead.

Battle of stalingrad

a pitched battle between the russian people and germany where millions of russians died defending their homeland. germany suffered a humiliating defeat at stalingrad and surrendered to the russians.

Battle of iwo jima

one of the bloodiest campains of the pacific theatre. less than 1% of the japanese defenders survived.

Battle of midway

regarded as the turning point of the pacific theatre. the japanese suffered a defeat there that she never fully recovered from.

Battle of britain

a stupendous air battle fought between germany and britain. germany lost because of three things. one is the hurricanes and spitefires did not require an airstrip. two is the british planes that were shot down the pilots were saved whereas the german pilots were either captured, killed, or died from exposure. thre is the use by the british of radar.
