Moving the goalposts

Moving the goalposts is a method of denial which arbitrarily moves the criteria for "proof" or acceptance out of range of whatever evidence currently exists.

Examples

"Show me just one intermediate fossil and I'll believe in evolution". An intermediate fossil is then displayed but the arguer then either denies that it is truly intermediate, or demands that further fossils must be found between the intermediate fossil and the original two fossils.
