Evolution is the process whereby the genome of organisms changes over successive generations. The process of natural selection can direct evolution resulting in the appearance of novel form, behaviour, functionality and physiology. Evolutionary change can give rise to the formation of new species from existing species. The common ancestor between all organisms currently alive is one of the principles of evolution, although for viruses the single phylogeny is slightly disputed[1]

Natural selection is sometimes referred to as survival of the fittest, although biologist tend to avoid using the latter term.
