a term used in television. the color information in a televised scene is transmitted on the video carrier in the sidebands of a 3.57 Mhz suppressed carrier signal. this suppressed carrier must be reinserted at the receiver. the device that inserts the carrier is the color oscillator, this is a sine wave oscillator with a free running frequency of approximately 3.57 Mhz. in order for the set to produce correct color the color oscillator must be timed with the transmitting oscillator. the color oscillator gets its timing from the back porch of each horizontal blanking pulse.
